Show Wards Attain Quota In Drive All u hJL--J MRS. J. T. OSTLER, Correspondent Sandy Churchman Vandalism Reaches 88th Year To Be Curbed Patriarch William D. Kuhre, who In Sandy City has served as Patriarch of Jordan, East Jordan and Mt. Jordan stakes for more than 30 years, observed his 88th birthday, Sunday, Jan. 21. A dinner in his honor was held Sunday afternoon at the home of his son and daughter in law, Dr. and Mrs. Martin G. Kuhre in Salt Lake City, and Sunday evening a family open house in his honor was held at the home of his youngest son, Udell J. Kuhre in Salt Lake City. A resident of Sandy the past 70 years, he first worked at the LDS temple quarry in Little Cottonwood canyon and in 1900 founded the firm for which he continues to serve as bookkeeper. Still active in church affairs, he became sandy ward bishop in 1900, stake president in 1914 and has been a patriarch since 1919. He served a mission to California in 1926. He married Alice Adelia Drown April 14, 1886. She died in 1933. He married Mrs. Christene T. J. Wilson in 1937. Five of his nine sons and daughters are living: Kenneth D. Kuhre, Oakland, Cal.; Dr. Kuhre and Udell J. Kuhre, Salt Lake City; Newell J. Kuhre, Cottonwood, and Mrs. W. VV. Born, Dallas, Tex. He has 11 grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. A Sandy Slates Meet P-- T, A meeting, sponsored by Sandy P.T.A. will be held Thursday, Feb. 1, at 2:30 p.m. in room 11 of the new Sandy Elementary school building when a discussion and film on "Cancer Detection," will be presented by the American Cancer Society. The meeting is for women only and all women of Sandy and surrounding area are invited to attend, it has been announced by Mrs. Dunn Taylor, president, who will be in charge. of Mr. Jordan Stake have gone over the top, Primary, in the recent "Childrens' Friend" drive, according to Mrs. Vivian H. Pierce, president. To "go over the top" subscrip tions to the Primary magazine, must be obtained from 75 percent of all families in the wards, with children of Primary age. Another honor in Mt. Jordan stake is that to date, four wards in Mt. Jordan stake Primary have attained their "Heber J. Grant Paper Weights," in recognition for their contribution of $100 to the Primary childrens hospital, including Sandy First, Draper First, Crescent Second and Draper wards, as well as Mt. Jordan stake Primary board, who also qualified for the honor. Members of Mt. Jordan stake Primary include: Mrs. Pierce, president; ;Mrs. Irene and Mrs. Rose Fairbourn counselors and Mrs. Rachel Barley, secretary. All wards was passed by A resolution Sandy City Council at their meeting Wednesday, offering a reward of $25 to $50 for infromation leading to the conviction of the person or persons committing acts of vandalism in Sandy City or any property of Sandy City outside the Sandy City limits, or any property of residents of Sandy City, Mayor, Lsaac L. Sorensen, said. Destructive vandalism such as destroying windows in the homes, also destruction to the dog pound east of Sandy City hall; shooting of air guns which is prohibited by Sandy City ordinance; destruction to street signs and other property in the city, have been SANDBURR CAMP, D.U.P. reported recently. TO MEET THURSDAY Three Wards Slate Gold, Green Ball Sandy First, Second and Third wards M.I.A. annual Gold and Green ball will be held Tuesday, Jan. 30, at 8:30 p.m. at Sandy Recreational hall under direction of the ward M.I.A. officers. The affair will feature the ward queens who will reign over the ball, including Francis Ludwig, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Ludwig, Sandy First ward; Hazel Davidson, daughter of A. A. Davidson, Sandy Second ward, and Jeanncne Dowd-ing- , daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. Alma Dowding, Sandy Third ward. The queens will also represent their wards at the annual Mt. Jordan Stake M.I.A. Gold and Green ball. The ball is a highlight of the M.I.A. activity program. The meeting of the Sandburr of Utah Pioneers Camp Daughter will be held Thursday, Feb. 1, at 1:30 p.m. at Mt. Jordan Stake FUNERAL HELD FOR ACCIDENT VICTIM Funrela services for Andrew C. Nelson, 88, who died Thursday of injuries received in an accident at 8040 South Seventh East Street, were conducted Monday at 1p.m. at Sandy First ward chapel, with A. LeMar Hendrickson of the bishopric officiating. Speakers were John H. Shaw, Ezra L. Kunz, and Bishop John E. Rich, with closing remarks by Musical counselor Hendrickson. numbers included vocal duet, "Oh My Father" and "Softly and Tenderly" by Mrs. Elizabeth Sorensen and Mrs. Madge Stapley and violin selections, "Just For Today" and "Prayer Perfect", by Clifton R. Alssop, accompanied on piano by Mrs. Beth Sorensen. The invocation was by Dell V. Smith with benediction by Orren Greenwood. Interment was in Sandy City Cemetery, where dedication of the grave was by Noal C. Bateman of the ward bishopric. Mr. Nelson, a son of Nels and Murna Bengston Anderson, was born May 18,, 1862 in Sweden. He came to Utah as a convert to the L.D.S. Church 48 years ago. He was employed at the Smelter many years and had also engaged in farming since he came to Sandy. He was a highpriest of Sandy First ward. Mr. Anderson changed his name to Nelson upon arrival in America. He was married to Pierson, April 24, 1888 in Sweden, and later the ceremony was solemnized in the Salt Lake L.D.S. Temple, May 18, 1910. Mrs. Nelson died in April, 1938. He is survived by two sons, Carl II. Nelson and Nels A. Nelson of Sandy.
