Show Chamber of Commerce Performs Many Functions To Aid Progress and Betterment of Community and The People hj R.Ufli J. D.Tlt President A Chamber of Commerce is an organization of business and professional men and women banded together for the good of ther community. Its function is to get things done for the community as a whole, not for any individual or any particular firm. Flor all the people; for all types of business; for all professions. Your Chamber is designed to and create business activity that means more business. By being a progressive organization, it is a leader and not a follower. Therefore it is forever confronted with many problems and tasks. The program of work is authorized by the Board of Directors g which is the branch of the Chamber. The Board approves the budget, receives and passes on committee recommendations and directs the general operations of the Chamber. The Board meets every other week to discuss the program of work whether it be retail proa benemotion, an action fit, course in politics or sponsoring a Public Relations Course (as Murray Chamber has). Chamber directors represent all segments of the Chamber's membership. Regardless of his affiliations with other organizations or the type of business in which he is engaged, he shares the responsibility for building the Chamber's efforts. policy-formin- fund-raisin- g, Chamber directors are: President, Roland J. Davis, in charge of administrative operations, management and procedure. Vice President, Clair Rosenberg, assisting in administrative operations and committee organization. Treasurer, Richard C. Howe, budget, finance and sources of revenue, fiscal operation. Civic Affairs, headed until his recent resignation by Ray Demke, includes the following: Improvement, planning, zoning, fire prevention, health and welfare, sports and Murray Boy's Club. Any recommendations must be approved by the chairman. d Highways and roads, by Ed Solomon, work with city, county and state officials. Granger, Murray,South Salt Kearns, Midvale, Lake and West Jordan Chambers have toured highway construction projects in the metropolitan district. The tour was mapped by the Highway Department, after which the group heard talks on the highway program at Prudential Federal Savings Auditorium. Retail Trade Promotion, headed by Clair Rosenberg. In with Frank & cooperation Thomas Advertising Agency, we have had three promotions, Easter, Mother's Day and Father's Day. Clair and the Chamber board planned promotions for July 21st and 22nd. "Days of '47 Values". Aug. 18th and 19th the "Million Dollar Days". Sept. 15th and 16th, also cap chair-manne- COMBINED ... tioned "Million Dollar Days". All loaJed with values. This was all made possible with the support of the Murray Eagle and Salt Lake newspapers and radio stations KMUR and KSOP. Membership and Dues, with chairman Walt Aman. Enlistment of new members and conducting campaigns are assignments. Walt has worked diligently in contacting businesses, for membership and inviting them to our meetings. We have a general membership luncheon meeting the first Wednesday of each month. We have had outstanding speakers at these meetings with every third meeting turned over to discussion of any problems or suggestions that have arisen. Government and Finance, Richard Howe, chairman: A Chamber must constantly strive to cultivate good relations with Chamber and government officials of other cities, counties and states. Dick has the leadership and ability to act on all legislative matters that are channeled through the Chamber. New Membership Contact, Hal Charon, chairman: This committee calls on all new business and welcomes them into our community. The committee is comprised of Hal Charon. Dick Burbidge, Fred Teinert, Walt Aman, Bennie Williams and Jim Jensen. Civic Betterment, headed by Plato Kanell, is working toward improving, cleaning, paint CIRCULATION the papers with ing and remodeling of our business area. Due to the concentrated efforts of Mr. Kannell, and Mr. Davis, we have banners of Murray's Million Dollar Mile. Packer Sign Co. has completed road signs, 6' x 12' to be placed at the north and south boundaries of Murray. Chamber functions: Through organized effort our Hospital Committee directed valuable information regarding the need for a general hospital to the proper church authorities instead of the proposed maternity hospital. A blue Solicitation Control card system is maintained by the Chamber, whereby a merchant can eliminate unnecessary soliciting by unknown peddlers. A placard should be in each business telling the salesman or solicitor to register at Chamber office. In this manner we control the wrong type of solicitation and assist our merchants. Check Detection System Covers any fraudulent activity. The police department notifies the Chamber of any bad check artist or other faudulent act. We, in turn, notify members of each group retail, automotive, finance, professional and diversified. Within 20 minutes the entire business district can be alerted. New Business The Chamber assists any business contemplating moving into our area by locating property that Is available and suited to their needs. The Employment Service office acts as an employment service for local business and people desirous of work. Parking Space Parking space has been provided to assist shoppers at no charge.' Jaycees National Convention The Board voted to support Murray Jaycees and Utah National Convention Committee with donation. All Arabian Horse Show Sponsored a $25 class for the show, Sept. 1st and 2nd. Western Aluminum President Roland Davis worked with Kain Gaffney in locating him on State Street, Many people call and write the Chamber office regarding complaints and inauiries. W must serve as a clearing house of information, for brochures, surveys of the area, beginning with the original and continuing to its present day status, list ing of business spaces available, homes to rent or buy, all types of maps, things to do, places to see, trailer parks and motel listings. "MURRATS MILLION DOL-LO- R MILE" was adopted this year by the Murray Chamber of Commerce as a new name for our city's buisness and shopping area. We hope this slogan will help develop increased loy alty of our Murray citizens in patronzing their own business area, which In turn, will assist in the devolpment of our entire community.
