Beginning at age 50 have a fecal occult blood test and flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years or a colonoscopy every 10 years. Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. In the U.S. alone more than 1 million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year. Fortunately skin cancer is also the most curable cancer. Cancer of the skin is in plain view and so the most easily detected. Those at the most risk of skin cancer are those with fair skin and blue or green eyes. Risk factors for the most serious of the skin cancers, melanoma, are one or more blistering sunburn during childhood, a relative diagnosed with melanoma, more than 50 moles or at leave five large moles (more in size) or abnormal moles. than Melanoma kills more than 7,000 people each year but it can be completely cured with early detection. Malignant melanoma looks like a mole but it spreads. The signs of melanoma in moles are asymmetry, irregular border, color variations and a diameter larger than a pencil eraser. Each month take a few moments to examine your skin for any change in a mole or for changing patches of skin. To prevent skin cancer always apply a generous amount of at least an SPF 15 sunscreen 30 minutes before going out in the sun. Sunscreen needs to be applied to all exposed skin including neck, ears and head if hair is thinning. And wear a hat. With proper precautions and with early detection, cancer doesn't have to threaten any ones life. Col. Carolyn S. Bennett Health and Wellness Center by LL The most common cancers that affect men are skin, prostate, lung and colorectal. Foreknowledge about these cancers and their warning signs can possibly save your life. Prostate cancer has now surpassed lung cancer as the most common cancer affecting men. Every year about 179,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer. If detected early prostate cancer can be effectively treated, but early prostate cancer has no symptoms so the key to prostate health is routine annual examinations after age 40. There are two routine tests for prostate cancer the PSA blood test and the digital rectal exam. The prostate specific antigen blood test is a simple accurate way to detect abnormally high levels of certain substances in blood that can indicate prostate cancer. The annual digital rectal exam is an effective way to spot prostate tumors at an early stage. The earlier the cancer is caught the more likely a complete cure. Difficulty urinating, urinating frequently (especially at night), painful burning sensation on urination or blood in the urine, pain in the lower back, pelvis or upper thighs can be symptoms of prostate cancer. Hie Digital Rectal Exam and the PSA blood test can distinguish between cancer and a benign inflamed prostate. Since prostate cancer can occur without symptoms it is essential to schedule yearly examinations with your physician after age 40. This is particulmen. arly true for have the highest risk for prostate cancer. African-America- n i - I live Early African-America- Out acon3 afvruiaf fi Lung cancer continues to strike more than 94,000 men annually. Cigarette smoking causes 87 percent of lung cancers. The risk of king cancer decreases slowly as soon as a person quits smoking. The Health and Wellness Center conducts regular monthly smoking cessation classes. Call the HAWC to register. Although cigaat Ext. rette smoking is the cause of most cases of king cancer other risk factors are secondary smoke, asbestos and radon, a radioactive gas. This year approximately 63,000 men will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer, a disease of the lower digestive tract, and 28,000 men will die of it If caught early, however, colorectal cancer is very treatable. Anyone is at risk for this cancer but men with a family history of the disease or men who have polyps in the colon or rectum have a greater risk than the general population. The number one contributing factor in colorectal cancer is diet. Diets high in fat and low in fiber put people at a higher risk for colorectal cancer. Following the Food Guide Pyramid will ensure that people are getting the required fiber in the diet and keep the fat at a nutritionally safe level. Anyone who needs a copy of the Food Guide Pyramid can obtain one by stopping by the Health and Wellness Center, Bldg. 1277. As with prostate cancer the best defense against colorectal cancer is early detection. kop as? iwvtif corvtituuA... you &rlop ta (kbcaunleZ 25 45. &cui vlfc fcgiwvicj, on j'V; Off 30 Alternative Hair public Beauty i O i International Music 21 Jazz Night 28 Patriotic Night O Of sO 393-125- t 4 .. v5xia a ttemenoouA AuccA4 way cool... - $1500 Car Title Loans Persona!
