The Alpine Skiing venue at Snowbasin Ski Resort near Ogden was one of the largest venues, supporting approximately 25,000 spectators. John Golden, Computer Specialist at DECC where Ogden, worked in the media news personnel from around the world reported on the events. He provided print distribution of start times, results, penalties and their ranking. Rick Hansen volunteered his talents in Amateur Radio Emergency Service for the Northern Utah Regional Operations Center located in the Sheriffs Complex in Ogden. The center was set up to handle communications in the case of a phone outage. Hansen is a Computer Specialist who does Unix System Support at DECC Ogden. Shelley Etherington from the Unisys Technical Support Branch was a part of the Information Services team providing computer support at the Deer Valley ski resort. Martin Scheier, Unisys Technical Support, assisted at the Figure Skating Venue in Salt Lake City providing computing support. Gloria McFarland, Chief Customer Support Branch, worked at the Salt Lake Olympic Committee Headquarters in Salt Lake City as a human resource supervisor for the Paralympics. Jack Wilson, a Training Coordinator at DECC Ogden, worked the Speed Skating Venue at the Utah Olympic Oval. He worked as a security specialist in conjunction with law enforcement and the National Guard. He helped secure the event by checking for weapons and explosive devices with a magnetometer. Curling became an official Olympic medal event during the 1998 Nagano games. It continued to be such in this year's events. Most all the volunteers from DECC Ogden provided some type of technical support. All volunteers came away with experiences that won't be forgotten soon. Although tailoring may not be considered support in the DISA environment, Jill Roberts, a Computer Specialist in the Electronic Commerce Branch at DECC Ogden, volunteered her talent for just that in the wardrobe department at the Utah State Fair Park. She began in early November fitting costumes for cast members participating in the opening and closing ceremonies. In January she moved to Rice Eccles Stadium for the events where she provided assistance with costumes and last minute alterations. She met many celebrities and dignitaries including the President George W. Bush. Tom Schulz, a Computer Specialist, was assigned to the E Center in West Valley City back-to-bac- al where the media bulged with news reporters and journalists writing articles sub-cent- V ' ...V- sub-cent- er k tech-nic- 5) V er and interviewing athletes.
