Senior Airman Dennis Serls, 75th Dental Squadron, and his wife, Shonda, were returning home after spending Thanksgiving with loved ones in Missouri. They left the day after when the weather was clear. While driving on Interstate 80 in Wyoming, just an hour from home, with their three kijs, Despen, 5, Jayden, 2, and Peytenn, 3 months, in the back'seat, the weather quickly started to worsen. At 4:30 p.m., a mas-sive snowstorm blew in, covering the roads. "I thought we'd be able to make it home before the snow hit. We were so close to home I was in that comfort zone where you think nothing's going to happen," said Serls. "We had just finished putting the kids to sleep and getting some gas. As soon as we got back out on the road, it started coming down hard and we slowed down, but three cars just flew past us and I told my wife 'something's going to happen.' The visibility got a little bit worse as we were going down a hill. I saw one of the cars that passed us a pickup truck slide out on a corner and hit a tractor-trailer- . towing a jeep I tried to swerve to miss the wreck but the semi had taken up both lanes so our car ended up sliding into the pickup i 'f -mm mw m -- m - m m, vmt ji m m v ....1 wuv m. ...M L by Beth Young truck that had caused the accident After I realized what happened, I climbed out the back doors with my wife because the front doors were bent in, Serls said. The PSC Military Housing Company will host the forum at Club Hill Friday. The forum gives an overview of the project and includes bus tours of the housing areas between p.m. Arrangements have also been made for approximately 100 visitors to see inside several homes. Military family homes are being privatized so that they can be upgraded, maintained and improved faster. Under current fundyears, a private developer ing upgrading homes would take would be required to make the improvements within six years, explained Doug Arave, Base Housing Flight manager. For information on housing privatization, call Arave at Ext. For information on the contract call PSC at out Amazingly, except for some cuts and bruises, Serls and his family did not suffer any major injuries, but their car was totaled. The situation was made more difficult when Serls realized his wallet was stiil in the car that had been hauled away. "On long trips I put my wallet in the middle console. I tried to grab everything I could, but mainly all I got was stuff for the baby." Serls tried to locate his car the next day, but there had been so many accidents that night it took hours to find where his car was being kept. Two days later, when Serls got back to work, he had located his wallet, but still hadn't got it back. His supervisor, Tech. Sgt Krista Wealton, called the Air Force Aid Society, which sent him a check for $250. He used the money to pay his hotei bills, and buy groceries and new car seats for his sons. "Unfortunately we got caught up in a bad situation and luckily the AFAS was there to help out with our immediate financial needs." Serls said. The outcome would have been different t if AFAS hadn't helped." After his experience, Serls plans to make a contribution to the AFAS this year. The AFAF drive runs through March 29 with a goal of $60,159. To contribute, talk to art AFAF unit representative. 20-2- 5 363-227-3.
