Show T LIFETIMES Cantata choir Dec. 13, 1991 V brings musical to yule season Hilltop Times B3 7 by Lisa Colgate Hilltop Times staff There's a chill in the air and Christmas is just around the corner. Christmas is a special time of year, a chance for families and friends to join in the celebration of Yule-tid- e traditions and festivities. While many anxiously await the holiday seasons, for some this occasion is often greeted by the annoying hustle and bustle of overcrowded shopping malls. For one group, however, the meaning of Christmas is never lost in the rush. This year the Hill AFB Cantata Choir invites everyone to share their Christmas tradition, a musical celebration of the spirit of Christmas. This year the Cantata Choir will perform a musical play titled "Christmas is Calling You Home," a story about slowing down at Christmas. The play focuses on God's wish that mankind drop the stressful pace and recognize the true miracle of Christmas, the birth of Christ. Cantata literally means the story of Christmas in music, and for the past 14 years the Cantata Choir has performed Christmas musicals comprised of religious songs and traditional Christmas carols for all faiths. er The ecumenical choir members are as diverse as their religious backgrounds. Members, who volunteer their time, range in age from 9 to retirees. There e are active and duty members as well as several civilian volunteers. Mavis Harrell, choir director and founder, enjoys volunteering her time. "This is a chance to celebrate the spirit of Christmas with all faiths," she said, "and what could be more special than an inexperienced group of people making beautiful music together." The choir members meet their task with as well. When asked how they find the time to sing during the busy holiday season, they seem to agree that sharing the spirit of Christmas with others brings them the ultimate Christmas joy. "Song brings a message to people," choir member Sue Orona said. "The message I hope to convey is my love for and trust in God." m D D D 346 N. Main St. D 546-471- 6 It is the play's main character's love for God that helps him to discover the true meaning of Christmas. "Christmas is Calling You Home" is based on man lookthe Christmas memories of a ing back on his childhood. As a child he sees adults hasten through Christmas and remembers telling his Aunt Flora to slow down. For Harrell, the story hits hardest when the boy tells his aunt to slow down or she'll miss the baby ld Jesus. "I think this is true for so many of us today. I wonder if there aren't a lot of people who miss what Christmas is truly about," she said. The Cantata Choir will perform Dec. 22 at 5 p.m. and Dec. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hill AFB Chapel.
