Show NEWS 03 C for eocenceepers gear up Sixteen security policemen from the Air Force Logistics and Air Force Systems commands are firing weapons, running miles cross country and navigating Hill AFB's daunting obstacle course as they train for the Air Force's annual Peacekeeper Challenge. Peacekeeper Challenge, which is the closest thing to combat security policemen can experience in peacetime, will be held at Kirtland AFB, X.M., in September. The event allows security policemen to compete in three types of events to measure marksmanship, physical conditioning and combat readiness. The 16 security policemen, including Hill's AlC Eric Hostetter of the 2849th Security Police Squadron, competed in a combined AFLCAFSC competition at Edwards AFB, Calif., in July. More than 60 security policemen from 12 bases competed. The 1 6 were chosen from those competing and will train Hill until the Air Force competition. Nine of the at 16 will go on to Kirtland. Teams from Hill; Brooks and Kelly AFBs, Texas; Arnold AFB, Tenn.; Egiin AFB, Fla.; Hanscom AFBs, AFB, Mass.; Newark and Wright-PattersoEdand Robins Tinker Ohio; AFB, Okla.; AFB, Ga.; wards and McClellan AFBs, Calif.; all competed in the command-widchallenge. At worldwide competitions in the past, the two commands have been archrivals, but they will field a combined team this year. By next year, the security policemen will compete as members of the Air Force's Materiel Command. Headquarters for that n e team will be at "This year's Peacekeeper Challenge was a tremendous success," said Col. Richard D. Kelley, chief of AFLC's security police. "Bringing the two commands together has been a smooth transition, and we will field a very competitive team. We have potentially the best team in the Air Force right here." At the worldwide competition two years ago, AFLC peacekeepers went to defend their Defender Challenge title. They lost the title in the final few meters of the exercise. Defender Challenge is the competition's premier event. It is a combat scenario competition that has each team going out on a reconnaissance patrol looking for possible enemy snipers in an area they're responsible for securing. AFSC's team was first in the grenade launcher in 1989, and had several other impressive team scores in various events. Last year's competition was canceled because of Operation Desert Shield. In this year's command-leve- l competition, Kelly AFB won the Defender Challenge. Robins was second and Arnold was third. McClellan's SrA. Matthew Garcia won the openseven secing day 5K run. He finished in onds. Halfway through the race, Garcia was e mark he overtook the seventh. At the field. He won by more than 300 meters. In handgun competition. beat out Arnold and Hanscom. Edwards was tops in the combat rifle event, beating Kelly and Newark. Kelly finished first in the machine gun competition, while Eglin was second and Robins was third. Kelly security police repeated a first place finish in the grenade launcher, topping Edwards and Brooks. Edwards was first place finisher in the team 5K run and team obstacle course.
