These efforts were highlighted in the April 1991 edition of Airman magazine, which featured a series of articles and interviews calling for our individual and collective attention. Several .Air Force-wid- e initiatives were presented. There are still some who haven"t hitched a ride on the environmental bandwagon, though. Odor Does the pollution present a strong odor or smell that is unpleasant? Does it burn or irritate your eyes, mouth, nose or skin? D Secretive Is there something secretive or susactivipicious about the potential pollution-causina ty? Unusual night operations by construction company? Is wastewater or solid waste being dumped at other than official sites (parking lot, back alley, in the woods, someone else's trash dumpster)? The Air Force has many policies and regulations for the control of industrial and hazardous wastes, but they exist with a purpose. It may be easier to pour 10 gallons of paint into the sink or dump solvent into the street, but where does it go from there? Are attitudes such as "Get rid of it! I don't care how!" in your unit? Are you told to do something that is environmentally unsound, dangerous or even prohibited? Is required documentation being falsified or unavailable? Top management is frequently not aware of the environmental problems and concerns you may face. This communication breakdown can often be solved by alerting management of potential violations, hazards and conditions. You can help by telling your supervisors or the with your base environmental officer. If follow-usuperiors fails to resolve the problem, elevate the report to the next management level, or to an inspector general or investigative office. Get involved. The following guidelines will not identify all pollution problems, but they will help you identify pollution problems that should be reported. (For example: Does the normally clean smokestack now emit a darker smoke or a more noticeable smell? Have you noticed a change in the odor, taste or color of your drinking water?
