In essence, he was a glowing example of "Do as I say not as I do." Then I started relating this behavior to the military. We have a multitude of regulations and operating procedures that are to be followed. But, what kind of examples do we set in carrying out our duties each day? Do we instruct someone or enforce a regulation and then blindly turn around and break it ourselves? How can we expect another person to "play by the rules" when they see us creating our own? We all work under the same rules and are, or at some time will be, in a position to enforce them. It comes down to a simple statement. Lead by example. I know, it's nothing But it's original or a lot easier to enforce a rule when you don't have to respond to, "You didn't follow the regulation either." What kind of example do you set for others? Your actions, whether good or bad, can and will affect the actions of others. As for that day on the road, it was a perfect demonstration of the point. After the trooper left the highway, you wouldn't believe the number of stupid drivers I saw barreling past... Editor's note: Article courtesy of Air Force News Service. by Set. At least it seems that way. Take the other day as I was driving back toward base. I, of course, was driving the speed limit. OK, I wasn't, and I was probably called stupid by some other drivers. That's OK, though I was calling them idiots. As I was driving, a state trooper entered the highway ahead of me. He didn't seem to be responding to a call or chasing after anyone, so I did what a lot of drivers would do: I matched his speed and stayed behind him. He couldn't ticket me if I was driving the same speed, right? After all, I was following his example. After about five miles, I happened to look at the speedometer. Imagine my surprise to see we were doing 65 in a 55 mph zone. I (and the five or six cars behind me) continued our "follow the leader" convoy for about 20 minutes until the policeman exited the highway. The whole scenario made me wonder about a couple things.
