The department of gynecology was ranked 40th in the country for care in fertility problems and reproductive cancers. U Hospital, in conjunction with Huntsman Cancer Institute, was ranked 43rd for its research into drugs and genetic underpinnings of cancer. The high rankings came as no surprise to hospital administrators and staff. Richard Fullmer, executive director of U Hospitals and Clinics said, in a written statement, this has been one of the hospital's best years ever. "This recognition reflects the quality of U Hospital's health-car- e program," Fullmer said. "Obviously it's nice to be nationally recognized. It's a nice indication and recognition that we are truly one of the best," said Dan Lundergan, associate administrator of U Hospitals and Clinics. Karen Miller, a physician in the gynecology department said, "We're thrilled about the recognition." But with its staff of nationally recognized experts, she said she already knew d I the department provided excellent patient care and research. Of the nation's 6,000 hospitals, 2,000 were assessed by the magazine's annual survey because of their affiliation with a medical school, a wide variety of specialized treatment and other factors. From those 2,000, the magazine recognized 203 hospitals as being among America's best. It recognized hospitals for the large numbers of tricky and risky procedures performed by their doctors, close adherence to advanced treatment guidelines, the incorporation of new findings into patient care and research con t ducted that gives desperately ill patients additional options. These guidelines were announced by Richard Folkers, media director at U.S. News and World Report in a written statement. Hospitals do not receive an overall ranking. Karen Miller of the gynecology department said she believed her department's high rankspecialists she ing is due to the ty high-quali- works with. She said that in the more than 15 years she has worked at U Hospital, there has been a physicians. The long history of same doctors have been there a long time, creating a stable department and excellent training, she said. Many of the physicians are nationally-so- me internationally recognized experts in high-quali- ty their fields of oncology and reproductive endocrinology. "I feel extremely lucky to work with such people," Miller said in recent interview. "And they're great human beings." Dan Lundergan agreed. "We're really proud of our employees, they're the ones that make it happen," he said. The hospital's recognition for cancer treatment with Huntsman Cancer Institute was due to the high quality of the multi disciplinary effort, said Lundergan. "I think we all believe this is the best place," he said. "We're proud of our institutions, our staff. We truly want to provide the best care for our patients." Last year, U Hospital was also honored as high-quali- ty one of Utah's Top 10 Family Friendly Companies by the Utah Department of Workforce Services for its services and policies toward faculty and staff. Last year, the hospital's labor and delivery department delivered a record number of babies, with 3,624 deliveries, breaking the previous record by more than 100 babies. akirkchronicle.utah.edu IUHITNEV ON TOUR GARAGE continued from page Live...
