Ryan Quinn, Zack Simons and Torin o Koos led the men's squad, while Hatlevik and Ashley McQueen were among the top finishers for the women. While pleased with performances he has seen thus far, coach Kevin Sweeney has also noted some room for improvement. "The talent and potential definitely is there for success," he said. "But we are struggling to score consistently in all (the events) and you can see it in the results. The competition is so tight that we need results like cross country posted in every event." Sweeney noted the home field as the reason for some of the poor outings. "There is some pressure in skiing at home because the nerves are high and the desire to perform well at home is high," Sweeney said. The final day of the invitational will feature the classical events in cross country at Soldier Hollow in Midway, Utah. rbrunnerchronicle. utah. edu Swimmers Fall in First Home Action Bar-br- sn3 t continued from page 9 . j iVt'i 0 .... In the second half, the lead grew to 0 when Tim Frost threw a skip-pato a wide-ope- n Jacobson for three. After that, the four freshmen were inserted into the line-u- p to gain more game time experience. It led to scrapbasketball and a py, turnover-plague- d 0 IPFW second half advantage. "I thought our concentration waned. The secret is to maintain concentration," Majerus said, though 10 players saw more than 16 minutes. Frost and freshman Richard Chaney scored 12 points apiece, while freshman Tim Drisdom, who finished with eight points and six assists, logged a team-hig- h Freshman 23 minutes. had five Markson Bryant points and four rebounds in 22 minutes and Chris Jackson had four points and five rebounds in 18 minutes. "We're going to need the freshmen later, so it's good to get them some confidence," Britton Johnsen said. IPFW coach Doug Noll, whose team played its 12th road game in 17 contests, said his Mastodons' lack of energy can be attributed to beating rival IUPUI earlier in the week. "I know we arc not going to match up physically with a lot of teams this year," said IPFW coach Doug Noll, whose Mastodons are in their first season of Division-- I basketball. "But I want a better effort." Noll, whose team has played six Mountain West opponents, said the Utes could be in the hunt. "I think other teams like Las Vegas UNLV and San Diego State are athletically at a higher level," Noll said. "But with the way lUtah can execute, if they can stay healthy they'll chal- 46-2- Utah . The U swimming and diving teams suffered setbacks over the weekend, as both teams fell to the nationally-ranke- d Washington Huskies. The women also fell to Oregon State the previous day. The Ute men, after rising above the .500 mark with a victory over Florida Atlantic on Dec. 21, 1 dropped to 5 with the loss. The women lost 0 and saw their record fall to 6 with conference play looming Thurs120-10- 5-- 125-9- 7-- day. The women won just four of 13 events, including the 400 free relay. Freshman Ariane Rich had a strong showing in the 200 broast, finishing first with a time of 2:25.91. On the men's side, freshman Jonathan Larsen won a pair of events, the 50 free and 100 free, but the team won just six of 13 events to drop its fifth of the season. "We fought hard but it just was- n't enough," coach Michael Litzinger said. "Overall, we swam well butj they just swam faster." Against Oregon State on Jan. 10, the women won seven of 16 events, including three from Neringa Statkeviciute, but still came up short. While the men have next weekend off, the women begin their conference schedule this Thursday on the road against Colorado State. On Jan. 18, they travel to New Mexico to take on the Lobos before both U squads take on Wyoming at home Jan. 24. CHRIS BELLAMY |
