Initially, the incorporation of musical numbers feels strange and out of place. One minute, Selma is in the factory running a machine and the next all the factory employees are singing and dancing and more or less running amuck, with Selma at the center. The film and its story would not be nearly as powerful without Bjork as the main char acter. It is difficult to imagine another actress playing the role of Selma with such emotion and charm. Bjork's spritelike image lends itself wonderfully to the role of Selma (particularly in the musical numbers).. Catherine Deneuve does a fine job as Selma's devoted friend. David Morse's depiction of Bill makes it easy to dislike his character, in which case it can be argued that he succeeded in his role. As far as flaws are concerned, the film has very few. The most bothersome was the use of a hand-helcamera from time to time. This footage was shaky and difficult to focus on. Also, the great amount of drama and tragedy presented in this film feels in some instances. Everything that could possibly go wrong for Selma does, and by a grand scale. However, the contrast of tragedy and lighthearted musical fantasy helps balance out the drama. "Dancer in the Dark" is unlike any film presented so far this year and for that fact alone it is worth viewing. fun-lovi- ' el DAMCER "" oy rating operation this year are Erin Tolman and Natalie Carlson, and they have big plans.
