Show THURSDAY. OCTOBER THE DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE BUSH. Wasting Your Vote continued from page 7 Editor This is an open letter to all the students at the University of Utah who are thinking of voting for Ralph Nader this election. I have only one word to say: Don't. I know you want to send a message to the electorate and declare your dissatisfaction with the system. But you are in error if you think your Nader vote will accomplish this. This year's election is a dead heat. The polls show that George W. Bush and Al Gore are splitting the electorate down the absolute middle. This election will be the closest one in recent memory. And there is one thing that is truer this year than others; every vote will count. If you vote for Nader or Pat Buchanan or any of the others, you will be taking votes away from the candidate that will win. And it doesn't take a crystal ball to predict that either Gore or Bush will ultimately win, despite all the third party votes accrued. It's just that inevitable like it or not. So I urge you to vote, but vote either Democrat or Republican. And if you want to elect a man who is philosophically closer to Nader's ideas, vote Gore. Don't elect Bush president by voting for anyone but Gore. DANNY DAVIES Sophomore, Communication but among minorities. Since 1992, African American fourth graders in Texas have made the largest gains in math and Hispanic fourth graders have made the second largest gains. Today, those same African American fourth graders rank first in the nation in math. African American and Hispanic eighth graders in Texas ranked first and second in the nation in writing. Texas eighth graders as a whole ranked fourth in the nation. Also, during Gov. Bush's watch, the number of minority students passing the Texas state skills test improved by 89 percent! The number of total students passing the test jumped by 51 percent. No wonder Dubya has done so well electorally with minorities in the state of Texas. As a Republican, his numbers among them are staggering. During the last Texas gubernatorial electior. Bush had more than 30 percent of the African American vote and right around 50 percent of the Hispanic vote. Republicans need to realize that improving and reforming education is not just the right thing to do, it's a tremendous opportunity for the party. Democrats are unable to do the job because they're in bed with the teachers' unions. These unions are designed to represent teachers and not students. . 51 continued from page 7 ; The religious tag "Mormon" is often treated as &n ethnicity by members of the LDS church who have in fact not, exercised any more choice in the matter" than caucasiaiis hi being born whit's or homosexuals gay. The teachers' unions will be all for improving teacher salaries and benefits (which needs to be done), but will be opposed to any changes in the way education is currently administered. Because of their lack of loyalty to the teacher unions, the Republican Party is the party that's capable of making the necessary changes to duplicate and expand upon the progress Dubya has made in Texas. In so doing, the Republican Party can expand upon the popularity Dubya has garnered with minorities in Texas and bring it to a national level. Even though that's pretty good incentive for Republicans, the best incentive should be that it's the right thing to do. Making sure that all students are properly educated will in the long run bring reduced crime rates; it will do more to solve the civil rights problem than any program we currently have; and it will set up the United States to continue to lead the world economically and politically. Dubya's really onto something here. Of all of his campaign- promises, let's hope he follows through on his education promises. They may be long-tersolutions, but the results of long-tersolutions are also more sweeping and profoundly felt than any short-terresolution of matters. rmmr .&HSHS.TJTJ By ' 26, 2000 7 i !
