Show IOC Shou Id Legalize D nigs tffU'l r ' 1 J J LlV 25. 2000 WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER THE DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE BRUNNER Chronicle Sports Columnist Yet another drug scandal from the Summer Olympics was exposed when the International Olympic Committee stripped the gold medal from German Alexander Leipold on Monday for use of the banned substance nandroione. The gold medal in freestyle wrestling was subsequently awarded to silver medalist Brandon Slay of Amanita, Texas. Cue the patriotic rnusscour morals payed ' 167-pou- off. After this most recent incident from Sydney has come to light, I have a proposition for the IOC for future 'competition; Why not just make all drugs and currently illegal substances fair game? The IOC has to realize that the only solution to this ongoing problem Is legalization. The majority of the athletes use drugs anyway. The idea would ssve loads of time and moriey eliminating the whole annoying process of constantly testing Oiyrapians for illegal substances. I, for one, was an avid Saturday Night Live fan in its glory days, and remember their parody of a bends down drugged-ou- t Olympics. The to attempt the lift of an incredible amount an d.his arms are ripped out of their sockets. Sure, an occasional setback such as this nught get criticism tot the IOC, but think of all the hassle that could be avoided. The IOC must get a handle oa its drug enforcement policies. They must reaii.e that athletes would willfully risk their lives and their health for the glory of cheir country by taking drugsAnd can you even blame tbern? Kerri Strug turned in a gutsy performance in the '06" Games, and fame and fortune in : , - . advertising brought her wealth. I don't see how Olympic athletes can even keep up with these endless lists of prohibited substances. If this keeps up, the Olympics might rival horse racing in the number of banned substances. But, of course, that won't happen until legal gambling is allowed on Ohmpic events. Slay iook his recent victory in step, saying he knew "the ageny of defeat before the thrill of victory." But I think I would feel cheated to be awarded the gold weeks after I had lost. I think the greatest part of being an Olympic gold medalist would be the pride felt during the playing of the national anthem. It shows that you are the best in the world. I think being awarded the medal weeks afterward would ; take away from the glory. Stay got what he came for, but not in the way he had always dreamed of, because of the drug problem. Salt Lake City is fortunate in that it likely won't encounter the drug use that has been a theme of the Summer Olympics. Drug use has been a problem for the more basic summer events, whers bulk and size is emphasized over technique, I don't think getting beefed tip would be. beneficial in a sport like curling. No matter how many substances are banned by the IOC, there will always be athletes willing to give in to the needle. It is sad that competitors cannot be trusted, but when it comes to the glory of your country and the opportunity that comes with winning, it almost seems worth it. The Olympics are a way of putting a country on the map and shooting an athlete Into the ypotligbt The IOC has to get a better grip on the situation before the Summer Games come to Athens. Some integrity must be put back into the Olympics. The continuing drug offenses cast a shadow over the Games at Sydney. Drug u ?e is something that should not exemplify international sportsmanship. The IOC needs to clean it up, or opt for the alternative of eliminating cheating by outright legalizing iL , WALDEN 11 Henderson take up more space. on coach What's the over-undLon Kruger wishing by midseason that he'd stayed at the University of Illinois, where the Illini are expected to reach the NCAA's Final Four? He was impressive as a rookie, and should only get better, but ultimately, he can't do it by himself. Projected Record: 34-4- 8 27-5- 8. Chicago Bulls: Young talents of the Year Elton like Brand, Ron Artest, and rookies Marcus Fizer and Jamal Crawford indicate a solid future for the Bulls. Atlanta Hawks: This franchise is about as debilitated as malaria-infecte- d center Dikembe Mutombo. And it won't help that, once the trade deadline approaches, Deke will be a part of more rumors than a Fleetwood Mac album. In the meantime, this team will have to settle for watching Jim Jackson turn the ball over as often as he makes a basket, guards Jason Terry and DerMarr Johnson develop, and forwards Roshown McLeod and Alan Bryce Drew, this team is still guaranteed to suck more than an infant with a pacifier.
