Show 6 WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25, THE DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 2000 Move Mayfesi Back to Spring JULIAN CARR Mayfest 2000 Co-Cha- ir is a respected I think. I tend to ft"ayfest event TV .remember the past By here two Mayfests about and there. I firmly believe the success of Mayfest cannot rely on memories. Mayfest needs spring. Spring needs Mayfest To maintain the success of Mayfest, it is imperative to continue the tradition in the sprung. Let's look at why Mayfest in the Fall is a bad idea. First off, the name needs to be changed to "Sepfest," "Fallfest," "SepTepFest," definitely not Mayfest Let's take a look at the psychology of fall By the time fall comes around students young and old have been going to outdoor venue concerts all spring and summer long so is startSchool isn't Mayfest special. is and ing everyone trying to get adjusted to class and Mayfest is surrounded by preoccupied attitudes. The weather has been hot for a long time. People have gotten used to nice weather and suddenly the weather is getting colder. So Mayfest is no reason to celebrate. This past year, 90 percent of the vendors were unhappy, and we can't plan on any of them coming back. John Utley, with X96 spoke with Mayfest 2000's Marketing Board Chair Allison Higgins and said "you guys aren't going to have Mayfest in the Fail again, right?" We can't plan students young comes around -- mill m Hi 1 the time fall 20,000 people everywhere. Let's take a moment and picture the previous -- Mill v tim and old have been going to outdoor venue concerts all spring and summer long-s- o. '77-3- - Mayfest Isn't T-sh-irt ' , The sun never felt so good. Everyone has been inside all winter long and all of a sudden Mayfest is coming. Not only is Mayfest coming but hot weather as well so Mayfest is a reason to celebrate. Classes are almost over and summer ss almost upon us and Mayfest would be sur mni in imih, imi hi' iniiw mum .':"'-':;:r- - will continue for years to come. Mayfest should instigate a buzz that overwhelms the campus of its presence. I'm sorry, but this just isn't possible in September. Do we really want, to make the strict decision to host Mayfest in September due to weather concerns? April is the answer. Mayfest thrived for 23 years in May. There is reason to say April's weather is unreliable no more than May's. In order to host Mayfest in April we would have to wait a year and a half before the next Mayfest. We already have to wait one year, what's another half going to do? It's no sweat The student's will realize it is for. the greater good. I propose to move Mayfest back to spring. SPRING IS April is a lot closer to May than September first of all The psychology behind spring consists of happiness and celebration. When April rolls around we are seeing temperatures in the 70s and 80s, which feel so good. The essence of winter ending is felt throughout campus. By the time winter is over everyone has forgotten that it is possible to hang out outside in just a and shorts, Mayfest will be the first outdoor venue everyone will be at so miiiiiiii ihat the presidential race is between Bush and Gore, and most people do in fact believe that But the fact of the matter is that these two candidates represent two different sides to essentially the same coin. There are other coins, but the media does not allow thera to be heard. Once the American people start allowing different voices into the forum, such as the voice of Ralph Nader, we may start to hear a pocketful of coins jingling in our pocket. And that is the way a democracy should work. We ought to demand the jingling of different viewpoints and ideas when we turn on cur TVs to view debates. Matching funds are the first step to empowering the Green Party. If you're a Republican, rest assured Bush will win the Utah votes. If you're a Democrat, and you really want your presidential vote to have impact, you might consider moving to a state like Ohio, where the electoral votes aren't predetermined. Actually, it's too late to move for this election, so vote Nader Whether in the spring or fall I'm confident the tradition of Mayfest si Mayfest is speciaL continued from page 5 rounded by positive attitudes. I'm sure 2 majority of you are asking yourself about the risky weather in ApriL It turns out that April gets less precipitation than May. At the University of Utah, from years 1949 to 1990, April received on average 2.3 inches of rain. May received 24. September received 1.3. Between the years 1948 to 1993, downtown Salt Lake City also recorded more precipitation in May than ApriL April received u inches of rain while May received L2. September received 0.7. May does have an advantage in the temperature categoryonly 3.5 degrees advantage that is. Years 1895 to 1990, Salt Lake City airport has recorded the month of April averaging 69.5 degrees. May's average temperature is 73.0. September's average temperature is on X96 coming back- - The only reason Mayfest 2000 is considered successful is the appearance of Built to Spill A decently large crowd came, watched, then left That is not our vision. All members of Mayfest 2000 unanimously agreed that moving Mayfest to spring is the best idea. Fall is no good. yi ii mi nynn inn continued from page 5 ting away with so many winks and so much nodding? Why is black magic of this sort so or even needed in the first place? We hear the same rhetorical question over and over again: What would have happened to our fledgling democracy in the days of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln or even in the days of Kennedy had there been as much apathy then among voters as there is today? My response in kind is this: do we r actually propose to compare Dubya, Al, Pat and Ralph to Washington, Jef--, ferson, Lincoln or Kennedy?. Sounds.. like more of that black magic. Where have all the great men gone? Why aren't they running for office today? Why aren't we discussing four ever-prese- k 353nS'""i SilfiisaMinin DemocratRepublican coin? differently aligned parties named GOOD! m in 2000. Would most people wholeheartedly support Nader and everyone of his policies? Probably not It seems Nader's stance on the issues has been buried beneath his crusade for fair treatment What people seem to know about Nader, like his admirable zeal to stop pollution and his opposition to the powerful corporations that have usurped the political process from the American people, sounds pretty good. Even if you don't agree with a single thing he says, you should vote for him. This is the only way to ensure your vote as a Utahn is not wasted. And I ask, how does hearing a fresh view threaten anyone in a democracy? The important point to realize in all of this is that the Green Party's emergence into the American political scene threatens no one. If, by a combination of luck and hard work, the Green Party ever became dominant in American politics, many people may realize that they truly do not agree with Green stances. That's fine. You don't have to vote for Green candidates. But wouldn't it be nice to at least see old alternative to an that VOTE nt Powell, Jackson, Feinstein and Elizabeth Dole? It seems like the real good guys either don't want the top job or don't get to run for it. Perhaps they're a little disgusted with the prospect of having to wink and nod a little themselves in order to win primary elections or keep the IRS buildings open during budget negotiations. Depressing, isn't it? So now you know why I'm not voting. I think there's, a good chance that I'm not alone. Change in Washington? Not in this orgasm of capitalism and ignorance we call America today. Not as long as elections are nothing more than a.U o.C the candidates are the wrong candidate and every party is equally dangerous. Wake me up when it's over.
