Show Wednesday, 20. May 1998 The Daily Utah Chronicle -- 1 1 God Bless Amerika Comrades! Rolfson's India Opinion Dear Editor, Before the People's Revolution of the United States gets underway, I'd just like to express my opinions while I still can. By the People's Revolution, I refer to the constant stream of Marxism, "Socialism," and good college campus communism that flows daily in the pages of the Chronicle. I'm not the world's most conservative person .(in fact, I'm a Democrat who voted for Clinton and couldn't care less if he inhaled), but I've got to draw the line at being prosMarxists. elytized by Just the other day, I was subjected to an editorial espousing the liberating, spiritual qualities of Marxism ("The Main Reasons Why I Am Marxist" Dave Hancock, Friday, 15.May 1998). Personally, I find it confusing how the political and economic systems of Stalin, Mao, and Castro would enable the oppressed workers of Microsoft and General Motors to realize their individual Now, self-style- d potentials as children of God. And in another recent paper, I read about how the United States' support of Indonesia is really a sinister plot among capitalists to oppress the poor of Indonesia. Maybe if you knew the facts of the situation, such as U.S. insistence on economic reforms in exchange for IMF assistance, you'd be in a better position to comment on the. situation. It has always been President Clinton's policy to help improve the economic health of countries like China and Indonesia because of the benefits (economic and political) it brings both to the foreign citizenry and to the United States. In this respect, our policy toward both China and Indonesia has been remarkably consistent. And, before I go, I'd also like to address the commonly heard statement, "The communism of the Soviet Union, China, Vietnam, etc., etc ... wasn't TRUE communism so that explains why it wasn't paradise on Earth." The answer to this lies in the inherent greediness of the human being we all want to achieve what we can as individuals, not as "the proletariat" or as "the international worker." We want equality of opportunity, but not necessarily of results. It was no different in the USSR, except that the party members decided to enforce equality of results on everybody but themselves while denying opportunity to many. There will never be true communism if it means reconciling opportunity and results because of differing individual abilities and the fact that we - would each like to be rewarded and I accordingly. All we can do think we do a good job here in Regarding Nukes Wrong Dear Editor, I am not pretending to be a nuclear physicist, but I think you were still feeling the effects of your "Seinfeld nap" when you wrote your editorial about India and its test of nuclear weapons. I got the feeling that to you this was no big deal, and India was doing the right thing. Let me share a little secret with you: nukes kill people; not one or two at a time, but thousands per use. - - is to try to make opportuAmerica nities available to everybody and let the chips fall where they may. nuclear small, device could kill more people A anyone. Akiyama writes, "Mr. Bentley's opinion, in my view, was offensive to me." Later, Akiyama implies that I think that condoms are evil. Akiyama argues that people do have sex outside of marriage, even though they shouldn't, so we should help them do it correctly and safely. Then Ryohei says that having condoms available at the Union is a matter of convenience. In my letter to the editor, I didn't argue that condoms are evil. It was actually Kenton Call's article ("Make Condoms Available in Union") that implied that condoms are evil. He compared condoms to pornography and "Which is the greater evil?" THOSE ARE HIS WORDS, not asked, mine. Personally, I don't think that condoms are evil. However, I do think it's evil to tell people that they can be irresponsible and not face the consequences of their actions simply by using a condom This idea of being able to avoid the consequences of your actions, besides being untrue, leads to moral decay. soldier in the Utah Army National Guard and I am confident that if you think about this situation from that point of view, you will see the absolutely catas- trophic possibilities that India using nuclear weapons presents. The one thing in Akiyama's letter that I can completely agree with is that making condoms available at the Union is a matter of convenience. It would be ' much more convenient for people to be able to have "safer sex" on campus at a moment's notice. While we're talking convenience, though, I think we should start selling ace bandages, first-aikits, allergy medication (for those allergic to latex), cough syrup, health food, and Prozac in the Union. That way people won't have to drive all the way to a pharmacy if they're feeling kind of sick. d According to Akiyama, "people do have sex." Ryohei goes on to say that people do so "even if they are not married." Akiyama doesn't personally believe in sex outside of marriage, nor do I believe in murder. But let's face it: people do commit murder. If they're going to be doing it anyway, they might as well know how to do it right There's trying to offer something to the other people on my block was related to nuclear proliferation (it was about as clear as a story from Michael Salazar). Kade, I know that you are a than all who died in Vietnam. I guess I'm no English major either because I didn't under Condom Opposition Mistaken Dear Editor, I am writing in response to Ryohei Akiyama's response to my letter to the editor.
