His presenvy ence on stage seemed to say, "If conducting this piece kills me, so be it. I will make these phrases work." The question is whether the Utah Symphony or the Salt Lake community can handle a Bernstien- - esque conductor. He certainly has vitality, but how would that posturing and dancing translate into a whole season ' of concerts? His dancing and facial acrobatics might get a little tiresome weekend after weekend. OK Just One Pick I just stepped out into the Union lobby and heard the angelic sounds of the University Women's Choir and was delighted to find that they are giving a concert Sunday at 7:30 PM in the West Institute. They are a small group, so director Lane Cheney can do a lot with phrasing and interpretation, and he does. Most of all, they blend exquisitely. The "Children's Carol," which they sing in unison, gave me goosebumps and their rendition of Saint Saen's "Ave Maria" is divine. Tickets at the door are $3 far students and $6 general. ary US. Gaisford and St. Clair contributed equally to the rendition of Cello Concerto. The structure of the piece was well-laiby both artists, and the liberties they took with the tempo and phrasing were appropriate. Again, St. Clair's ear for tension and energy came afterthought. The incredible sound he got out of the orchestra perhaps warranted all of that dancing. His phrasing was deep and rich and there was a riveting tension that pervaded the work. For those with the concentration to hang on to the bitter end, St. Clair's ending of the last movement was especially exquisite. The piece deals with heaven, and that is exacdy what it got from St. Clair and soprano 1.
