Should he go to higher authorities, including Robert De Niro as an Internal Affairs Investigator on bringing the bad cops to justice, or keep his mouth shut? Torn between doing right or loyalty to the officers he reveres, Freddy sits, uncertain of what to do until he is threatened by those he wants to be like, and no longer has a choice. That may seem to make him human, but it comes out with a fraction of that effect. Keitel, De Niro, and Liotta act as the real supports of this film. Keitel plays the despicable cop to a tee, making Ray the film's most hated character. De Niro is his usually brilliant self, and Ray Liotta is fantastic, with his best role since "GoodFellas." The only reason these characters are good stems from the strength of the actors portraying them. The characters in the film are not well crafted outside of the role of Freddy. It's as if writerdirector James Mangold, painted a detailed portrait of Freddy, with the depictions of the others ranging from sketching to stickmen. "Cop Land" is as difficult to watch as it is to explain. The film has good plot and story, however it's like a jigsaw puzzle missing too many pieces, and no matter how hard you try, the damn thing's never going to look like Mount Rushmore. The writing and directing are not bad, but are too jumbled to be powerful, keeping the film from reaching its potential. Rated.lt hell-be- m IT ' l" Dennis Miller once said "Sylvester Stallone has the range of a Daisy Air Rifle," and until "Cop Land" came out, I thought that was too much credit. It may be difficult to imagine, but Stallone gives a powerful performance as Freddy Heflin, the deaf sheriff of a New Jersey town ruled by dirty New fork cops. Not since "Rocky" have we seen Stallone act. Instead he's just been yelling, shooting, or telling pathetic jokes (remember "Stop or My Mom Will Shoot?"). "Cop Land" allows the audience the ultimate in suspension of disbelief; to think Stallone is actually an actor. Stallone portrays a man lost in a world he does not understand. A simple, A good-hearte- naive character, Freddy's role as sheriff is like that of Prince Charles; he's got the position, but it comes with about as much power as a Yugo going uphill with the parking brake on and no air in the tires. For whatever reasons, everyone wants in. This film, about a woman's attempt to be a Navy SEAL, the Navy's finest division, was a long time coming. Although many V movies and newsmagazine have come out over the years, there reports has been no attempt on the "big screen" to depict the struggle for minority rights in the military until "G.I. Jane." Because it is the first to depict this action picture and failed miserably. Demi Moore stars as Naval Intelligence trained Lieutenant Jordan O'Neil, who is naively recruited by a conniving female uphill battle for the rights of women, "G.I. Jane" has a responsibility to make the film not only profitable, but also win over public opinion to aid against bureaucrats, die military, and politicians. If this film is poor, it could very well turn the public off from seeing women in positions of power in die military. Thankfully. "G.I.Jane" poses a powerful statement about society and government's prejudices against certain parties, opportunity to become a SEAL, the made-for-T- but is also entertaining. Many filmmakers have tried to meld social issues with an senator (Anne Bancroft: AKA Mrs. Robinson from "The Graduate") to be a test case to find out if women can actually make it in combat. O'Neil heads off to training for the Navy SEALS, but finds many pitfalls along the way. Other trainees look down on her for being handed the Commanding Officer dislikes giving her special treatment, and the Master Chief (who conducts the training) is constandy trying to weed out the weak, and has his prejudices against women in the military. All these obstacles in her path motivate O'Neil to succeed. The more hostile the situation becomes, the more she wants to show everyone she can do everything a man can, which sometimes goes too far. She drinks Jim Beam straight, smokes cigars, not to mention shaving her head. The audience thinks, "Fine, break down stereotypical male barriers. We can handle it." But when, after surviving a POW camp simulation where she is brutalized by her Master Chief (Viggo Mortensen of "Crimson Tide"), O'Neil tells him to "Suck my dick," the audience groans collecdvely. Instead of the audience seeing this as a way of breaking through the gender separation, they think, "Silly Demi, you don't have a penis." Director Ridley Scott has done revolutionary work in film. In "Alien," he created a science fiction classic. "Blade Runner" became the greatest piece of futuristic film-noi- re ever. In "Thelma and Louise," he made a feminist movie for all audiences. These films have become groundbreaking classics, praised by audiences and critics alike. Can "G.I. Jane" be among this elite list? Probably not, but it still holds its own. - Gordon Hvolka The true powers in the town are the NYPD cops, a majority of the populatioa Among these are cocaine addict Ray Liotta ("GoodFellas"), who is both good cop and bad cop rolled into one; the corrupt veteran Ray Donlan, played by the talented Harvey Keitel ("Reservoir Dogs" "Clockers"); and his posse of other, equally corrupt, "boys in blue."
