Mclntyre It is a great pleasure for me to welcome you to the beginning of the academic year 1997-9- 8 at the University of Utah. Although I have been Interim President at the U. for only a few months, I've been an administrator and faculty member on this campus for 20 years. Each fall, I've enjoyed the atmosphere of excitement and anticipation that distinguishes this time of year. That is true of this year as well, as we face the second and final year of our transition from a quarter to a semester calendar. The challenge of that transition for students will be felt in the series of changes affecting the curriculum, the rhythm of the year and the timing of academic and student life activities at the U. The change to a semester calendar will be complete by fall 1998. The most distinctive and useful parts of your education at the University of Utah, however, may well keep changing throughout your life. If you are a student. Your education will depend in large measure on what choices you make and what you do with your decisions while you are here. That may sound preachy or obvious, but I recommend taking a fresh look at what's here for you. The opportunities are abundant. Through ihem, you can to I first came When I felt I the university, overwhelmed resources. You can also make the best of your university education by taking advan- tage of programs and opportunities. Here are five you should consider carefully: Through the University Research Opportunities Program (UROP) and the Bioscience Undergraduate Research Program (BioURP) you can work on a basis with a professor on a research project that will let you apply and expand what you have learned bureaucratic at times. We all need to work on that. But you have a responsibility both to yourself and to others to find the associates who can help when you need help and to whom from books or the classroom. You don't need to become involved in formal programs, however. In many fields the research of professors permits them to hire students to work with them in their laboratories or in the library. There, you will have a chance to see and participate in discoveries firsthand as they are being made. In the honors program, you'll be able to study a wide array of topics in close association with the program's faculty. Your work in honors will be crowned with a major project in your senior year that will give you a chance to make an intellectual journey into uncharted territory on a subject of particular interest to you. Independent study research projects are yours for the: shaping as you progress through your classwork in your major department. on all levels. We, as students, are in positions to really carve our names into its fabric, identifying ourselves with the university, faculty, peers, and even the community, long after sweatshirt or even walking from class to class, school spirit creates a sense of belonging to all students attending the University of Utah. I can remember the first time I identified myself with the University. I was back home in Idaho watching television with some of my old high school friends. The U.'s gymnastics team was gaining national acclaim, after doing so well at recent tournaments. Suddenly, I felt a part of something much bigger than myself. I came back to school and the university didn't seem so large and It was easy to visit with mtimidating. fellow classmates between classes. It was easy to study, and easy to get involved in student organizations. School spirit is different for everyone and just because I watched our gymnastics team on national television doesn't, mean that is the key to a successful academic career. It just means that the "complete college experience" is different for each student What I ask is that we all try to find where it is we fit in. to be mindful that our time here is significant and what we learn carries with us long and far after graduation. Good luck with the upcoming year, and welcome to the University of Utah! Damond Watkins ASUU President munity who need you. The university is a big place bigger than most of the cities and towns in Utah. It can seem pretty impersonal and bureaucratic at times. We all need to work on that. But you have a responsibility both to yourself and to others to find the associates who can help when you need help and to whom you can make your own contributions. Dormitories, the Greek system, professional and honorary organizations, tutoring, clubs, sports, stu- dent government, and student publications such as The Chronicle can expand your horizons and provide opportunities youll never forget. AD of these are part of the university we hold in common. I urge experience to take advantage of as many of you them as possible. I think you 11 find that the time invested will be well worth it I'm joined in that conviction by the answer found in the lives of so many of our alumni. They tell us that their insights about the world were deepened through such experiences as a course in Shakespeare, or chemistry, or psychology, or their work in student government, or at The Qronide, or their involvement in the many student life activities on campus. You'll discover, as have the many students who have gone before you, that youll find a great education plus good friends and good times at the university. I envy you the opportunities that lie ahead Do all that you can to reach out and take advantage of the richness that this campus provides. And best wishes for the 1997-9-8 can make your own you one-to-o- ne didn't know a person, the campus seemed so large and I was nervous about doing well in school. I quickly learned how to balance a rather busy schedule. I devoted so many hours a day to my studies, so many hours to my friends, and so many to myself. Looking back on that, I am reminded of how many different facets there are to a "complete college experience." As students, we are asked to attend class so that our minds may be enlightened and that we may discipline ourselves to learning. We are asked to associate with our peers, establishing lifelong friendships. We are asked to get involved with student groups, fraternitiessororities, student government, and various honor societies. We are asked all these things but hidden somewhere between the lines lies our school spirit The University is in a position to significantly impact all our lives, either directly or indirectly. We, as students, arc in positions to really carve our names into its fabric; identifying ourselves with the university, faculty, peers, and even the: community, long after graduation.. School spirit is something that exists research papers, advanced seminars, and creative proactivities. And in jects and addition to studying with professors in the forefront of their fields or disciplines, you will have access to collections in the state's largest research library, as well as a variety of outstanding computing and laboratory can seem pretty impersonal and academic, year and always.
