"If students get anything out of this today, I want them to know that young people went to the Capitol and paid the price for them he said. Following Rivera's remarks, Dr. Bill Gonzales, also a former U. professor, spoke Gonzales told students about challenges he faced growing up. "Everything we did back then was considered inferior," he said. "Where we worked and even what we ate was wrong. "I can remember telling my family to hide the tortillas and pull out the Wonder bread when neighbors came over," Gonzales said. Gonzales also made more serious remarks throughout the discussion, on one occasion holding back tears so he could finish his story. Gonzales left the audience with this advice: "It's very different up here now, seeing our numbers diminish so rapidly on campus. I think another strong group on campus is needed today, like the SOCIO organization we once had." Professor Armando U. Solorzano, spoke on more recent problems Chicanos are having in regard to education. "It is becoming very disturbing when you look at the dropout rates in Utah lr high schools," he said. "Eighty-seve- n percent of all dropouts in the state are Hispanic students, and 56 percent of all gangs in Utah are exclusively Hispanic" Current problems faced by Chicano students will be further addressed today at noon in the Union Theater, where Professor Sofia Villenas will moderate a panel discussion stressing "Social Chicanao Activism in Utah." 9 ay WEDNESDAY, May 7, 1997: Holocaust Workshop.
