He believes firing 350 White House employees is analogous to the and sacrifices he will ask Americans to make in the coming weeks. That's where he's wrong. Individual Americans will have to bear the inevitable increase in taxes and reduction in services that it will take to balance the debt. It is doubtful that Clinton or any of the other fat cats at the White House will suffer as result of these staff cuts. The only people that will suffer are those who are now out of a job. "belt-tightenin- WHAT SHOULD DO WITH THIS CONDOMS IN PUBLIC WE INTOLERANT CRUCIFY BIGOT? HIM! g" Haven Barlow goes for pervert vote with a career-endin- g amendment Americans wanted the government to cut government waste, not necessarily government edges. The staff cuts won't bring about real economic change and his administration isn't saying that it will. But he conveniently left in place those employees who make the highest salaries and fired those in the peripheral positions. If he, and other government officials, truly want to symbolically illustrate the government's committment to cutting waste, how about encouraging Congress to reduce the salaries of its members and staff? Instead, he cut the positions of bureaucrats who need jobs the most; those in the lower level, lower paying positions. It will take more than symbolic measures to get the country on track. Unless the requested of the American peopler works, we could be headed in a downward spiral. "belt-tightenin- g" Vote; dammit! Thursday is the last day to vote in the Students of the University of Utah Presidential and Assembly elections and the Chronicle feels the importance of doing so cannot be stressed enough. ASUU is responsible of a million dollars, for allocating a considerable chunk of your money. Since this money was originally yours, you still should have input into how this money is spent. Voting is the easiest way for you to do that. Voting booths are located in the Marriott Library, the Eccles Library, Ballif Hall and the Union Building and will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. for your convenience. Each vote entitles you to celebrate if your candidate wins, a sense of fulfillment of your civic duty and, best of all, justifies bitching next year if the candidates do something you don't like. However, this is a limited time offer and if you wait, it could pass you by. Get out and vote, dammit! Tribune, "Most sex offenders are some criminals who to be locked up for their crimes. I mean, really need to be There employees. His staff cuts have a lot of appeal to many Americans who believe that there are too many people receiving far too much money in such a huge bureaucracy. All that Clinton did, however, is trim around the locked up. Unfortunately, there are certain Utah legislators who are either too stupid or too callous to consider the ramifications of Y-- ; I've found they're good providers." I won t specu- late about where j Sv information Steve supposed Miller "moral character'' Chronicle Associate Editor keep echoing my through to alleviate the overcrowding and budget problems of our pretty, great state's correctional system. The initial idea, as I understood it, was to allow embezzlers, con artists and other criminals of the white fundamentally collar type to serve part of their jail sentence in their own homes. By equipping them with sky-rocketi- ng non-viole- nt electronic bracelets and requiring them to check in with parole officers and other corrections officials on a regular basis, their homes would be their prison and we would thus have space for all the muggers, murderers and rapists. The bill passed the House, but then Sen. Haven Barlow sponsored an amendment that would allow men and women convicted of third-degre- e felony sex offenses (such as having sex with young children) to serve part of their sentences at home, too. Why did Barlow support such a thing? Well, he told the Salt Lake on the correctional system. Barlow gets his their actions. Last month a bill was presented in our State Legislature that was ' . defenseless innocents. Perhaps he was looking further than simply alleviating some of the pressure from really it doesn't matter (even if the words mind). All that matters is that he and fellow Sen. Lyle Hillyard thought it was a brilliant idea to tap the resources of these "good providers" by letting them out of jail and putting them into treatment programs that they themselves ' Perhaps he was looking ahead to the day when he will be running for his seat again. After all, it's rare to see a lawmaker looking out for the interests of the sexually deviant. Perhaps these "good providers" can be turned into "good campaign fund contributors." It is my hope that the perverts Barlow is intentionally or unintentionally serving are the only ones who vote for him when elections roll around again. This would be an all-arou- nd service to the state and a much greater one than Barlow's presence on the hill is providing. would pay for. First, we'd know how large a It is a recognized fact that for percentage of the politically active Davis country residents every known sexual crime committed by a child molester, there are child molesters andor can be dozens more that remain generic sex fiends. It's also a fact that few child molesters ever mend their ways. I wonder if Barlow has any . children. Barlow's political career should end with this little see "Miller" on page six three-quarte- rs - -- -- - -- - Child care opposition display of ignorance ' ' ' Editor "';.'' I read an article to the editor in the Monday edition of the Chrony and a serge of verification hit me; the verification that even at an institution that promotes broad, informed thinking there is some ignoramus attacking an issue for which he hasn't a clue, namely, ' child care. campus-base- d Bob Hulbert, who wrote the contemptuous article, seems to think that students with children make little effort to care for their children and that they seem to be looking for some sort of free ride. Mr. Hulbert is bitching and complaining about an J issue that has more benefits than drawbacks. First of all, the campus-base- d ' environment provides an unequaled learning atmosphere for children. Secondly, it makes it easier g for serious students (Mr. Hulbert not included) to meet class schedules and spend quality time with their children. And thirdly, it provides a living classroom for people studying child hard-workin- development and family studies. It seems that all I can find is a large pro list and a very small con list As for the issue of legal liability and Robert DeBry filing countless lawsuits against the university, there is a little thing called a waiver; which almost all licensed day care facilities have, which would help negate such things as trivial lawsuits. (In Mr. Hulbert s article there is not mention of his class standing or major. I hope it's not - law!) would just like Mr. Hulbert to know that most major universities and even more colleges actively I engage in day care programs, as does industry, local businesses, Salt Lake County and even a lot of small businesses. They all recognize that a child makes a happy thus a employee, thus happy parent, a productive employee; so holds true well-cared-f- or in the case of the student. In the future I hope that Mr. Hulbert and will think other of his life-forbefore they preach. Remember Bob, your ignorance is showing. m - . Cory Fairborn sophomore history |
