Lex Grimley, Jake Hafen, Justin Libberton and Trent Smith earned the honor for soccer; Kim Allan, Stacey Johnson and Cally Gillman were selected for softball. All but Johnson, who was a junior, were seniors this year. By Beky All-Stat- e fhiil A i 2J Soccer A team captain, Grimley had and 12 goals 8 assists this season, his fourth in the program. He was a dominant force on the field and a consensus choice for the first team. "It would be tough to say too much about Lex," said Coach Mike Corbett. "He never gave up, even when things were looking bleak. He was a pretty quiet kid but was still our emotional leader that says a lot for him. " "Besides that, he's an good guy, is in this Corbett continued. "Sometimes sports not what you see. He's certainly our MVP." Hafen played forward, scoring 9 goals and making 10 assists this season. He was named to the first team by the Deseret News and the by the Salt Lake Tribune. He saw the field and fed others when they had a better chance to score. He was our offensive player of the year," Corbett said. Libberton was primarily a defender, but he still had a goal and an assist off the runs he was fond of making up the sideline. He also was first team in the Deseret News and second in the Tribune. "He is best described as an animal on the field," Corbett said. "He was our defensive player of the year. He rarely got beaten and was hard to get around. "Opposing teams had to basically gang tackle him to get the ball away, and he was always a threat to take the ball downfield," Corbett said. Smith also served as captain this year, and scored 8 goals and 4 assists despite being listed as a defender. He was a consensus second team m , choice. "He kept the team going," Corbett said. Clements also led the football team, which won a state sportsmanship award and thus reflected great credit on the entire community. Among the seniors graduating this year are many who add academic good prowess, citizenship and other strengths worthy of emulation to their athletic accomplishments. I salute all of those whose dedication and commitment contributed to their formidable alma mater's reputation, and challenge the youngsters coming up to do everything they can to add even more luster to the legend. t double-eliminatio- n format, allowing each team a minimum of two games. It may feel like something of an "off year" for the Pioneers, who seem to regularly capture multiple state championships, but faithful fans need not worry that Lehi has lost the competitive edge.
