The question of how soon can that person get back to work overshadows every waking moment of their day. The good news is that for professional unemployed workers over 40 years of age, there is an organization that shares their concerns, offering training and assistance to get them back to work. The 'name of this organization is Forty Plus of Utah. Forty Plus is a organization developed about 10 years ago unemspecifically to ployed professional workers in the skills needed to find another job. "Forty Plus offers a place for me to come where I can devote time to look for a position plus assist others in the same pursuit" explains Joe Cuglietta, returning Forty Plus member. "It is an excellent place to network. "Because of the information that is available to you (at Forty Plus), it is a strong source for finding a position," Cuglietta says. "Its' better than the newspaper or headhunters." The organization maintains an office on the second floor of the Workforce Services Building at 5735 S. Redwood Road in Salt Lake City. As a condition of membership, Forty Plus members are required to spend eight hours each week working at the office. There they can combine their personal job search with answering the phones or working on the computers. "This is one of the few places, except headhunters, where companies call in (directly) to advertise their positions," says Cuglietta. Job announcements are received daily over the fax machine and through the mail. In addition, the organization subscribes to many periodicals that feature job announcements. Internet job searches are also available on one of the office's five computers. The key to the success of Forty Plus has been the unwavering network of support between members as each pursuers their individual job search.1 "As someone who returned to Forty Plus, I just felt that there's so much camaraderie," shares Rick Sanchez, Forty Plus treasurersecretary. "It's a positive thing. We're all professional or technical people and it's nice to have a place to come and to know that you're not alone." "I know that I can speak to another professional (here) Sanchez continues. "Versus just stay at home. Get out of the house and feel like you're accomplishing something." Job hunting skills and job listings can be found in many other places, but camaraderie is an uncommon and welcome element of Forty Plus. It is frequently mentioned by members as one of the organization's biggest attractions. "I do like to camaraderize or work with the people," explains Chuck Hastings, another member. "It's where we can bounce ideas and frustrations off (of each other) because we're all in the same boat. We're all looking for jobs." "I think one of the positive mid-care- non-prof- er it things are the camaraderie you have with people who are in the same position you are in," says Cuglietta. "You have a common goal. And it helps to set a routine, just as if you were work- how to get back into a workforce that prefers younger, lower salaried workers. "There is a conscious or unconscious "The worst thing you can do when you are unemployed is to get up at 10:00 am," Cuglietta explains. "You still need to make a schedule as if you are working to keep that groove. (Without a routine) you can become very insecure." The profiles are then sent to almost 1500 businesses along the Wasatch front and often stimulate a lot of employer inquiries about members. "One of the main features that Forty Plus offers is that we send out resumes to 1000 plus in the greater employers Wasatch area," explains Sanchez.
