This musical, with 17 oritH- nal Perry compositions, is the n first to make use of many pioneer diaries scripting the Mormon exodus. Far from a merely historical play, however, the production presents the taxing trail life in a unique and exhilarating new sensibility. Rather than treating one incident on one trip, the playwrights have found a means of combining many wagon trains into one evening's first-perso- experience. "We are very happy and excited for this production," says Norm Nielsen, SCERA President. "Judging from the rehearsals, this is going to be an outstanding talent showcase. The voices are especially first-rat- This is the perfect e. Lehi SCERA will launch its 1998-199- 9 Encore Season Oct. 1 with a critically-acclaime- d pioneer musical starring Marvin Payne and based on diaries of pioneer relatives of the playwrights. The season of 14 attractions will also feature a holiday concert with country singer Michael Martin Mur-phe- y as well as The Peking Acrobats, and the nostalgic tunes of Reunion, plus a trilogy of productions featuring celebrated local playwright and actor James Arrington. The Trail of Dreams," a collaboration by Marvin Payne, Steven Kapp Perry and James Arrington, will launch the SCERA's second indoor showhouse as a performing arts theater, the first of five at its newest venue, and the first time the new theater has been used for live productions. Individual tickets will be $9 in advance, $11 the day of the show and $8 a ticket for groups of 10 or more. Shows are Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays. SCERA Encore Season tickets, including Trail of Dreams" and 13 other major events are available for $32.75 for ages three and older. Payne directs the show and stars as John Brown, who is Payne real-lif- e great-gre- at grandfather, a pioneer who made more than a dozen treks west and served as the quintessential captain for the pioneer migration. "Its a great challenge to act and direct... in fact, that's an understatement! But I draw strength from the fact that my great crossed the plains many times and was in charge as well. Maybe it runs in the fam- r . :: great-grandfath- er ' s .: . 'k, ily." Arrington says, The Trail of Dreams" is exclusively about the pioneer trek. We selected actual pioneer diaries, more than 60 of them, to try and tell something like the whole story. It was intimidating, but when you start using real words from real people, it's quite remarkably invested with truth." Even though the production has seen over a hundred performances (some in California, Arizona, and other parts of Utah) the writers are still fine tuning their product. "Great plays are written many times before they attain clarity," says Arrington. Some differences from earlier productions include a new choreographer several tightened and short-- ' ened scenes, recasting of most roles, and a strengthening of 225-ART- 225-256- 9. Michael Martin Murphey, who has played to sold-ohouses in three previous concerts at SCERA's Shell Outdoor Theatre, storybrings his down-hom- e telling and passion for the rich heritage of the Old West to life with renditions of western clas- sics and a share of cowboy mas tunes in his "Cowboy Christmas Concert" Dec. 2 at Mountain ut mm plotline. Arrington says revisiting the script isn't painful, "The pioneers gave everything they had to complete the journey, and we should do no less. Our very best in return is our tribute." Marvin Payne stars in the pioneer musical "The Trail of Dreams," a creative collaboration between himself, James Arrington and 16 in the new SCERA Steve Kapp Perry. It will play Oct.
