Sooner or later, all growing businesses reach the point where '. they need to raise funds for ; ; expansion. According to the Utah Association of CPAs, the key to " financing the growth of your business is willingness to try ; both traditional and not so tradi-I- ; tional ways to find capital. Here's - a rundown of some ideas to get ' ; you started. ; ;- ;Look to your nearest and v dearest Many of the most successful X companies would not have been created in the first place had it been for the financial back- ing of friends and relatives. Of course, borrowing from relatives and friends can get sticky. If you decide to go this route, ; ; be sure to have a written agree-- ; ' ment that clearly spells out the terms to which you and your J ; benefactors have agreed. Be sure that you don't set the interest rate too low or the Internal ;i Revenue Service (IRA) may ; recharacterize the loan in order to infer interest at the statutory ' ' federal rate. This situation also may result in gift tax conse v not '. quences. Cash in or borrow from retirement funds Consider cashing in the retirement plan you took from your last job or withdrawing money from your Keogh account. But be aware that you'll be required to pay income tax on all funds you withdraw and also be subject to a 10 percent penalty if you are under age 59 Vz. If your spouse has a 401(k) plan at work, a better alternative might be to borrow against the plan. Employers' rules vary, but you usually can borrow the lessof the present value er of one-haof your vested benefits or $50,000. Generally, you'll need to repay the loan within five years and, if your spouse quits or loses his or her job, youH probably have to repay the loan all at once. lf 942-349- state swim meet fifth in Brad Savage highest among locals With 157 points, the Lehi Pioneer boys' swim team took fifth at the state 3A swim meet. The downside is that you could lose your home if the business fails. government Small business investment programs and economic development corporations sponsored by state and local governments are often overlooked sources of financing. When seeking funds from these groups, be prepared to discuss how your business will benefit the locality. Try the Small Business Administration (SBA) The SBA offers several categories of loans, most of which fall under the SBA Guaranteed Loan Program. Proceeds can be used as working capital or to purchase inventory or equipment. These loans work like bank loans except you must have already been turned down by a bank in order to qualify. However, be prepared for a tedious and time consuming application process. All told, perhaps the most important factor in raising capital for business expansion is persistence. If one source turns you down or offers you unfavorable loan conditions, move to the next one on your list. Readers didn't think hubby's health was more important Dear Readers: It seems that I am in the dog house big time. Remember the Rock and a Hard Place"? She had a dog and four cats and married "Jim," who is allergic to animals. He yelled at the dog and said it was stupid. She added, however, that Jim was otherwise a wonderful husband and father to their son. I took the position that her husband's was more important than the animals' and she should find them a good home. I thought that was a reasonable response, but the readers didn't think so. The first major volley came from "Sally" in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She wrote, "That marriage is doomed. A woman who would banish her dog to the kitchen for a man, after the faithful pet had slept for eight years at the foot of her bed, is an idiot." well-bein- g i If , a - From Detroit: Your reader whose husband is allergic to her pets doesn't need a marriage counselor, she needs an allergist. My cousin had a similar problem when she brought a dog into the family. The "problem" turned out to be a godsend. The vet suggested an allergist, and my cousin's family has been living happily ever after. Beverly Hills, Calif: It isn't easy to "find a good home" for an older animal. If "Rock" takes the dog to a shelter, it is likely to be put to sleep. In the event the dog is adopted, it will spend its remaining years heartbroken, wondering what transgression caused it to be discarded by its beloved owner. Holly Browde Massachusetts: As vice president of our local animal welfare agency, I must object to your response to "Between a Rock and a Hard Place." I see too many "dumped" animals that for some reason become an inconvenience to their owners. I doubt that a man who yells at his wife's dog will turn out to be a great husband or father. Klamath, Calif: Please tell me why the wife should be the one who makes all the adjustments. 100 Liana Wallman Cliff Wallman Lon Sorenson 140 S. Main 135 N. State 135 N. State 1407 E. PI. Excuse me, but a man who is abusive, even if it's verbal, not physical, is not a good father or husband, and no amount of brains or faithfulness will make up fbr his boorishness. If he yells at the dog, how long will it be before he does the same thing to his son? Get with the program, Annie. Dear Readers: I would never advocate getting rid of a good husband and father in favor of a pet, no matter how beloved. I agree, however, that the man should try allergy shots before giving up. The chances of finding a good home for those pets is about zilch. A better alternative is to talk to the vet about new shampoos that reduce the dander that most people are allergic to. If the cats need to be kept outside, they can use a heating pad in a special cat shelter on stilts like the one I use. My cats love it in the winter.
