Show Wednesday, December 31, - Free Press 1997 - - Page 6 Sports Pioneers hold their own against Tracy Wilson By Winding down the Lehi High School basketball players have run into some strong competition in the 4A ranks, but they continue to win most of their games and hold onto a 2 mark. Last week the Pioneers bowed to Spanish Fork at home after previously beating Box Elder on the road, and last evening they played Springville at home. This Friday West High School brings its Panther squad to the LHS Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. In the Spanish Fork contest, Lehi "didn't play well," according to Coach Dave Filimoehala and dropped only their second while game of the 5-- pre-seaso- n winning five. The Dons outscored the Pioneers in three of the four lead quarters, held a two-poias they entered the final period and won 65-5- 6 with a last stanza compared to the Pioneers' 15 points. Filimoehala used his bench frequently and ended up with seven names on the score sheet. Spanish Fork had three in double figures but Lehi could only push two into double digits. Mike Christofferson and Travis led the Colledge Pioneers with 13 and 12, respectively. Sophomore Dave Christofferson recorded nine on two field goals (one from range) and four of four from the line. free-thro- Jake Terry and Braden Cooper added eight each while Hadfield's four and Justin Libberton's three capped the scoring. Free throws again played a major role in the contest as Lehi was whistled for 25 fouls to the Dons' 19. At Box Elder, the Bees' Jarom Bishop put on a shooting clinic with seven treys Andy to end up with 26 tallies. He was joined in double figures by Brian Cusick with 16, who also had a trey and five of seven from the stripe. On the Lehi side of the roster, Cooper led the way with 25 points on nine field goals, three from the arc and four of five from the charity line. Terry added 10 on five fielders. Mike Christofferson chipped in nine on two field goals, one from the arc and four of four from the stripe. Colledge hit five of eight from the line to go along with a field goal for seven points. After the West High contest on Friday, Lehi will turn its skills on only 3A competition for the rest of the season, starting with Emery, Morgan and Park City at home Jan. 9, 10 and 16. Sprewell is whining that getting fired from his team and suspension enduring a one-yefrom the NBA are, penalties for the crime. The public is turning mostly deaf ears to his protests, because us regular working stiffs know that if we'd done what he did, we would not only be fired but we'd be sitting in jail awaiting a trial on assault charges, at least. Sadly, there are at least a half-doze- n NBA teams that would take the man in a heartbeat if he managed to get the suspension lifted, and even if he doesn't, he's not barred from earning millions playing elsewhere. Even more troubling to me than this individual incident is a pattern of violence and other unacceptable behavior in athletics that has trickled down even to the Little League level. ar ..103.3 94.5 Spanish Fork increase excitement at athletic events while teaching them marketing skills and building relationships between the community and schools through corporate sponsorship. and Bear will do half-tim- e quarter '' use the ratingspoints tc the home team's Add 3 rating.
