Citizen, Free Press, Review, November 12, 1997 - Page 14 Christmas tree cutting permits now available for families Foster homes needed for children The Western Region of the Utah Foster Parent program is searching for people to provide a safe haven for children while their own families heal. Currently, in Utah, there are only 760 foster homes available for the 1600 children who are in need. "Because there aren't enough foster homes, we end up placing children wherever is available," said Laura Ackerman, the Western Region Foster Parent trainer and recruiter. "The kids end up being in shelters or group homes longer because there is nowhere else for them to go." Interested parents will receive training on how to deal with abused and neglected children from the Division of Family Services and are eligible to get compensation for food, clothing and shelter for the foster child. Children range in ages from infants to 17 years old. Parents need to have good physical and emotional health, must be at least 21 years old, and must have a stable income to provide for their own financial needs. In addition, parents need to provide a clean home stay-at-hom- 374-810- Eagle Mountain official canvass results Official canvass held Friday, Nov. 7, 1997 at 3:30 p.m. at the Town Office, 130 W. Total coliform are common in the environment and are generally not harmful themselves. The presence of these bacteria in drinking water, however, generally is a result of a problem with water treatment or the pipes which distribute the water, and indicates that the water may be contaminated with organisms that can cause disease. Disease symptoms include diarrhea, may cramps, nausea and possibly jaundice, and any assoand headaches ciated fatique. The symptoms, however, are not just associated with disease-causin- effects. EPA has set an enforceable drinking water standard for total coliform to reduce the risk of health adverse these effects. Under this standard, no more than 5.0 percent of the samples collected during a month can contain these bacteria, except that systems collecting fewer than 40 samples per month that have one total coliform-positiv- e sample per month are not violating the standard. Drinking water which meets this standard is usually not associated with a health risk from disease-causin- g bact eria and should be considered safe.
