Show Citizen, Free Press. Review - Obituaries Shirley Jean Messersmilh Haws Shirley Jean Messersmith Haws, age 62 of Lehi, died Oct. 18, 1997 at the American Fork of Hospital i cancer. She was born July ! 20, 1935 in Cedar Fort, Utah, daughter of Ralph and Henry fC'j Margaret Elizabeth Berry She married John Messersmith. Knollin Haws (COL, AUS, Ret.), April 8, 1953 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She graduated from Lehi High School and BYU with honors and a in degree Elementary Education. She truly loved each and every student she taught. She especially loved the students who struggled and loved to help Elien B. education! She was honored as the Outstanding Educator in Alpine School District and received the Golden Apple Award in 1997. She retired in June of this year. She served in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints as Stake and Ward Young Women President, in the Stake Primary Presidency, and Ward Relief Society Presidency. She had a great love for genealogy and the Family History Program. She was a great teacher of the gospel in all the organizations. She earned her golden gleaner award as a young woman. She served as chairman of the Lehi Events City Special Committee and Lehi Parade chairman for many years. She was the first President of the Leity Club. She also served on the Lehi Recreation Committee, Lehi City Library Board, as secretary of the Progressive Party, as secretary of the Lehi District Republican Party, as a delegate to the Republican County Convention, and was honored as Grand Marshall of the Lehi Roundup. During those years she built five Sweepstakes Winning Miniature Floats. Shirley wrote many stories and poems. Several were published in an University English text book years ago. She had received numerous awards for her writings. She loved to go camping in her recreational vehicle with family and friends. She had many talents in crafts including cake decorating, oil painting, and she helped operate the Haws Craft Store in Lehi with her family. She dearly loved her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed the outdoors and loved to camp and fish with her family. She also enjoyed crafts and tending her grandchildren. (Kelly) Brown, Lehi, 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Additional survivors include two brothers: Merrill Beveridge, Santa Barbara and Darrell Beveridge, Orem. She was preceded in death by her husband and her son Paul. Graveside services were held Monday, October 20, 1997, in the Pleasant Grove City Cemetery.
