He transferred to Lone Peak High School as the agricultural instructor and FFA advisor. Over the past three years, Gowans' students have won many state judging competitions along which have placed among the top teams at the national level. Students have also received their American FFA degree and helped their chapter receive the Superior Chapter Award on the national Families looking for a nice hour evening hike should take a look at the Tibbie Fork Loop trail, beginning near Tibbie Fork Dam and returning near the inlet streams of this popular reserblue-gree- n voir. Along the way, hikers, bikers, and horsemen will note the changing plant communities, temperatures, and abundance of water as the trail takes visitors from the drier, warmer southwest side of the mountain to the cooler, wetter northeast side, offering perspectives of how a life is affected by mountain location. Color should be abundant throughout the year with in the spring and summer. As the air becomes crisp again, you may also see large numbers of golden aspens and crimson maples, outlined with dark green pines. wild-flowe- Finding the Trailhead This meadow is one of the many sights the hiker on the Tibbie Fork Loop trail. - 6389 Elevation Mil! Creek Trail at Dam 7300 at sign at top - 3.36 miles (Approximately Length 2.5 hours round trip) -- Cross the spillway at Tibbie Fork Reservoir, after parking near the dam. After you reach the pavement's end, you will notice a large conglomerate rock and a trail climbing moderately-steeto the southeast above the road that drops down into the summer cabin area. Before you begin your hike, you may want to watch the fish rising in the lake below, a young angler trying to catch a wary trout, or the serene views of the canyon below. Trail Description This trail begins on the west side of a mountain and climbs though several switchbacks, crossing oak, sagebrush and maple. Below, you can see numerous summer cabins and beautiful stands of pine. The trail continues to climb steadily to the southeast, where you may see deer, squirrels or a hummingbird along the way. Be aware of other trail users, including horses and mountain bike riders. Caution should be exercised while on the trail to avoid confrontations. Cutting switchbacks will make the trail less enjoyable for you and increases erosion. Continue on the well defined trail as it turns to the south side of the mountain and enters groves of maples, providing shade for forest travelers. This is one of the steepest hiking sections on the route, so take your time and enjoy the scenery while you catch your breath. Eventually, after your ascent, the trail levels out and you arrive at a large, fairly wet meadow. A gentle climb will take you to a larger meadow to the southeast. Plenty of mosquitos await your visit, but spectacular views compensate for their presence among the thick aspen stands, skunk cabbage, and fir trees, surrounding the area. Temperatures seem to drop as you arrive in this meadow, and note several springs feeding the meadows. Shortly beyond the second meadow to the southeast and with a little rise, you arrive at a trail sign pointing to Mill Canyon Trail. Take this connecting trail to the north (left), which will return you to Tibbie Fork Reservoir. Here, you may appreciate some yarrow and coneflow-ers- . among the pines and aspen. Following this new path and after another gentle ascent, you will note abundant skunk cabbage growing in an abandoned beaver pond. Although this marshy area couldn't properly be called a pond anymore, it appears to be a remnant of some very ambitious beavers, possibly-trappeor killed several years ceeding. Farther along the way, you cross a fairly large log jam in a nearly dry creek bed. In the spring months or during severe thunderstorms, it likely fills with water, creating hazards to travelers. Gowans has been teaching at Pleasant Grove High School for that will greet ago. Wildlife abounds in this area and you may notice several animal tracks in the wet mud. We watched a snake capture and eat a fairly good sized salamander, while taking a quick water break here. The trail begins a fast descent through quakies and pines, providing more shade for the forest traveler and your connecting trail eventually meets with Mill Canyon Trail. Continue on this trail downhill to Tibbie Fork Reservoir. Numerous sections of this path are very wet and muddy as you walk through the cool dark pines. The trail becomes very wide in the wet sections and appears to be torn up by much use. Eventually, improvements or alterations may be necessary to reduce damage to these wet areas. The strain babbles to your right as proceed downhill. After some time, this stream crosses your path and you must ford it at some point. A small trail heading to the left avoids this crossing for a few minutes, but may not prevent you from getting your feet wet. A large red colored rock towers above and willows line the stream. Flowering dogwood, Cottonwood and catnip can also be found in the area. After cooling your feet in the stream two more times, you eventually arrive at the American Fork River as it feeds into Tibbie Fork Reservoir. Returning to your vehicle now requires crossing this more significant river and traveling along the north side of the lake or walking, in the shade of the pines, along the south end of the lake and climbing down a few rocks to where your hike began. ?
