Show fiiqliiitljliia)iriiiri Brigham Young University's Museum of Art is presenting the premiere exhibition of a countrywide traveling show this month. The "Fields" exhibition by Highland artist Gary Smith will remain on display through Nov. 1. "These paintings are like no other landscapes you will ever see" said the Highland artist. "They are of great, big, open-spac- e fields" "Gary Smith is among the most significant of contemporary Utah painters," said Campbell Gray, museum director. "He is one of the most respected living Utah painters." Smith grew up working as a boy in Oregon. "I have worked fields for many years, and I have been involved in just about every aspect of farming available," farm he said. Smith said he has painted fields for several years, but this past emphasis was more on the people in the fields than the fields themselves. "I've left the people ofT the canvas and focused on just the fields," Smith said. "A lot of the open field space is gone. It is being gobbled." "When we think of landscape paintings, we think of a nice, comfortable enclosed space with mountains or something prominent in the background," Gray said. "What Gary does is turn our attention to the earth itself by just having the vast fields before us." "These wide-ope- n fields are left for us to think about the earth and the land, which give us life. It's an excellent exhibit," Gray added. "Because the fields are so vast and open, they appear to be silent," Gray said. "That silence is powerful and reflective." Visitors to the exhibition will not only be able to view the paintings, but also see a video monitor that will show Smith at work.
