Theater organ impresario Michael Ohman will use restored the Capitol's Wurlitzer organ for Harold Lloyd's comedy "Safety Last." Utah Lyric Opera Society Utah County's new opera company will host an opening gala, with Metropolitan Opera Star Ariel Bybee is the featured soloist, Oct. 19 in the UVSC Ballroom. Night Citizen, Free Press, Review, October 9, 1996 Page 15 'Messiah' to feature guest artist Barbara Allen will be the guest soloist in a Mozart piano concerto as the Utah Valley Symphony opens its 39th season Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 9 and 10, in the Provo Tabernacle. Clynn D. Barrus will conduct the orchestra, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The program will open with Festival Brahms' Academic Overture, followed by Dvorak's Slavonic Dances, Nos. 5, 6, 7 and 8. Allen, who has returned to Provo after a teaching career in California, will take the stage following intermission. She will perform Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major, K. 488. The concert will conclude with Respighi's 77ie Pines of Rome. Tickets at the door are $5 ($4 for students and senior citizens). Season tickets are also available for purchase. Cost for the five concerts is $40 per family, $30 for individual reserved seating, $20 for a single ticket and $15 for students and senior citizens. Additional concerts are the Christmas concerts with soprano soloist Joann Ottley on Dec. 4 and 5; the Young Artists concert Jan. 22 and 23; the spring concert March 19 and 20 with horn soloist Larry Lowe; and the pops concert featuring An Evening in Vienna on April 16 and 17, with vocalists Susan Alexander and Arden Hopkin. Allen, a Provo native, has been performing since age 10, when as a student of Reid Nibley, she made her debut with the BYU Symphony, playing a Mozart concerto. She went on to earn bachelor's and master's degrees from BYU and a doctor of musical arts degree from the University of Illinois, where she studied with Souliama Stravinsky, son of the fame composer.
