Show - Free Press - Wednesday, August 28, 1996 Page 7 Vet's Ballpark now hosting thousands Recreation Committee seeking to rename fields to honor citizen Imagine a facility in Lehi that hosts 4,000 to 5,000 visitors per week. Believe it or not, the facility already exists and is known as Vet's Ball Park on Lehi's West Main Street. Having just completed another successful season of baseball for the youth of the community, city recreation director Mike Hansen estimated that 1,800 youth play games each week. He said that if just two family members come to watch each of the games, about 5,400 people will be in attendance. From 1993 to 1996, the program has increased by about 30 percent; Hansen projected that that figure will increase to about 48 percent by 1997. Another successful venture at the facility is the new concession stand and scoring building. Many volunteers spent many hours planning and constructing the stand, and during its first year, the operation was termed a success. Under the direction of Becky Felix and Julie Berry, the success was greater than the Recreation Young people line up at the new concession stand at Vet's Ballpark, which has the potential for hosting more than 5,000 visitors each season. Citizens are being asked to nominate individuals for whom the park may be renamed. Committee had ever anticipated. The committee has worked on several other projects as well, which include maintaining the Community Calendar marquee on Main Street, improving the traffic conditions at Vet's Ball Park and upgrading the grass area west of Hutchings Museum for use as a soccer field. Future plans include pursuing the construction of a recreation center, an adult softball field with four diamonds and an arts center. In conjunction with the remodat Vet's Ball Park, the Lehi Recreation Committee would like to rename the facility to honor a member of the community that has had an interest in recreation and who has donated their time and eling efforts to the youth of the community. The committee is inviting citizens to nominate up to four individuals whom they feel would be worthy of the honor. Nominations should be submitted to committee chairman Johnny Barnes, 622 W. 1200 North, Lehi, or at the Lehi City offices, 153 N. 100 East. i I ALIGNMENT SPECIALS I i i ANY BRAKE SERVICE Not valid witn any other otter. Utah Lake provides some of the best warmwater fishing in the area with catfish, white bass and walleye topping the lists of available species. Larry Mullins, manager of Utah Lake State Park, reports that other great recreational opportunities await local residents at this water. He commented, "Utah Lake is a great resource for Utahns. In terms of boating opportunities, water skiing, personal watercraft, and so on, this is one of the few lakes where you can just go,and go,, and not have to worry about turning around." Charlie Thompson, Central Region Aquatics Manager for the Division of Wildlife Resources, added, Trendwise, this is a good fishery that isn't used very much. We have outstanding white bass fishing, great channel catfish fishing, and good walleye fishing during the spring." To catch the hungry whisker- - Regional Fish Biologist for the Division of Wildlife Resources, reported, "In terms of a sport fishery, we do lack a forage base. Before we introduce any type of a forage base, we have to understand how that will relate to everything else, and how that might impact the June sucker." Mike Radice, Division of Media Resources Wildlife Specialist, summarized the future of this nearby recreation resource, "Utah Lake needs a good population of forage fish and other habitat improvements, to establish it as a strong fishery for walleye and other game fish. Right now, though, the main management thrust at Utah Lake is preserving June suckers. Native only to the Provo River and Utah Lake, these fish take precedence over all other management efforts." Currently studies are underway to learn more about the June sucker and other sport species in Utah Lake and to understand habitat requirements for these fish. The goal of these studies is to eventually add improvements, which will benefit all fish found in this water. Tom Sportfish Pettengill, Coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, added, "Catfish will take nearly anything you cast at them, but stinkbaits and small fish imitators usually produce the most fish." He commented that night fishing can produce some of the best action, where catfish, 10 pounds and more, lurk in the darkness and search for food. Pettengill continued, "If you're fishing from shore and are not finding fish, don't stay in that place 'too long. Keep walking along the shore until you find where the fish are. At night, use a lighted bobber, with your bait only two to four feet under the bobber."
