Nile R. and Josephine Nelson Johnson will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary at an open house hosted by their children on Friday, Aug. 16, from 7 to 10 p.m. It will be held at the old Highland Church, 10400 N. 6000 West, Highland. Nile was born in Cannonville and grew up in Orem. He graduated from Lincoln High School. He served in the Navy Seabees from 1942 to 1945. In the spring of 1946, he bought a farm in Highland and married Josephine Nelson and that year. He worked for Geneva Steel for 32 years, retiring Aug. 16 in April 1983. i Josephine grew up in Lehi. She worked in a rest home in Pleasant Grove and also worked as a waitress. Their children are: Douglas N. Johnson, West Valley City; Elaine J. Bainter, Murray; Rick L. (Barbara) ' Johnson, Josephine and Nile Nelson Jamie Fork; (Curtis) Welsch, Fork; Nila Jo (Kim) American Mikesell, Morgan. They have 17 grandchildren, five and some very special extended families. The prospective groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wynn Mansfield of Vernal. A reception will honor them that same evening from 7 to 9 at the Lehi 8th20th Ward Chapel, 145 E. 1500 North, Lehi. All friends and relatives are cordially invited to attend. Attending the bride will be Jodi Janet Koltermann, Koltermann, Melanie Mansfield and Megan Mansfield. The couple will make their first home in Vernal. Howard Yerke to be honored for birthday at family picnic The family of Howard C. Yerke will honor him on the occasion of his 80th birthday at a family picnic on Aug. 16 at Burgess Park in Alpine. Howard was born Aug. 14, 1916 in Moreland, Idaho to Reinhold and Sophia Guelck Yerke. He graduated from Blackfoot High School, after which he joined the army and ' was stationed at Fort Douglas, Utah. He married Blanche Beckstead; they were later divorced. They had three children: Helen Martin, Orem; Howard Allen (Gayle), Tooele; and Sharlene (Rick) Thompson, Lakepoint. Howard married Virginia Smith on Sept. 20, 1963. He has been like a father to her four children: Michael (Geri) and Tyler (Susan), both of American Fork; Jerry (Marilyn,, South Jordan; and Kayl (Susan), Alpine. Together they have 28 grandchildren and 12 Howard worked as a welder for several companies and later as a tool repairman at Tooele Army Depot until his retirement. , - - 'M P:::,,:: Aug. 14. t A. , V- 'Y 1 ' I Howard Yerke He has been active in the LDS Church, where he has served as ward clerk, Scoutmaster and Sunday School president. He served as an ordinance worker in the Provo Temple for 10 years. Howard enjoys making things with wood and spending time with friends and family. The institute was held on the campus of Princeton University as part of the National Leadership Program for Teachers, a program of the Wilson Woodrow National Fellowship Foundation. The institute, supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute of Chevy Chase, Maryland, was attended by 49 experienced teachers from 28 states and the West Indies.
