Show Nursery provides erosion resources By BRIAN BRINKERHOFF Outdoor Correspondent Located just minutes away from Lehi, a wealth of resources is avail- able for conservation use. John Justin, Nursery Manager of the Lone Peak State Nursery, reports that seedlings are now available for conservation plantings, including bare root and containerized stock. Justin, manager for the past six years, explained their unique purpose, "We are here strictly to produce seedlings for conservation and have a long list of where our plants can be used. Conservation uses include windbreaks, wildlife habitat, erosion control, reforestation, and Christmas trees. Our goal is to make some type of permanent land improvement, which helps the environment or site where they have been planted This nursery doesn't compete with other local nurseries, as Justin - continued, "We don't produce seedlings for landscape or ornamental uses. If people are interested in purchasing for those purposes, we refer them to private nurseries and retail garden centers around the area. We also have a minimum order of 100 seedlings per order, which keeps our costs down, like wholesalers... Generally these seedlings are not well suited for landscape purposes, because of their size and shape. Some plants are less than three years old and don't have a chance of survival in urban settings, because they get run over with lawnmowers or someone steps on them before they get established. In wild situations, chances for survival are greater because those problems don't exist" John also explained that seedling demand has increased significantly recently,"Our biggest order this year is 98,000 plants. Our seedlings go fast, especially with orders of that size going to one person, which is 10 percent of all we grew this year." The nursery produced over 750,000 bareroot and containerized 200,000 seedlings in 1995. When purchasing seedlings, Justin recommends surplus planting to ensure enough survive, "You generally cannot expect 100 percent survival. Usually you can expect an 80 percent-9- 0 percent survival, but on drought years 50 percent survival is considered excellent...When planting seedlings, they should be planted at a high enough density to consider those that will be eaten by deer or will die because of drought, etc.." According to Justin, the most common problem people make when planting seedlings is improper handling. He commented, "You need to absolutely minimize exposure of the roots to the drying air and direct sun. Oftentimes people get their bareroot seedlings and open the bundle on a 70 degree day, dig a hole and plant one, while the others are laying around. By the time they get the 3 or 4 seedlings planted, the others will likely be dead. Other problems occur when seedlings are planted either too shallow or too deep...That is why our we developed planting brochures." Several free brochures are available at the nursery to increase survival of purchased stock. "We are not only a nursery here," added John, "...also located here are three crews of inmate firefighters, who also plant seedlings, improve big game habitat, restore streams, and build fences. Their primary duty is to control wildfires throughout the summer. These iff l U- III i I ? Natural Resources. We are a conservation organization, focusing our efforts on fire protection on all state and private lands, with respect to wildfires and urban forestry. We are also trying to become a driving force behind involving this state in an ecosystem management type of philosophy looking at broad scale management, which benefits both man and the environment. It is not really a preservation type of philosophy, but rather a conservation philosophy, where we are able to use and benefit from the land without hurting it." Other activities were also discussed, "We have been quite involved with riparian and wetland plants lately. These plants have become quite important, in recent years, and will likely become even more important in the future, especially in the arid west." "We have done quite a lot of mine reclamation work rehabilitating and reclaiming mine tail back-count- safer." John discussed other roles of the Elder Justin Whittaker ,.,wM,,Mml ings and spoils. To help beginners, several free brochures are available at the nursery discussing wildlife planting, development of windbreaks, and proper planting of seedlings.
