They must win one of the two contests to qualify for the state 3A playoffs. loss to the 0 Coming off a 4A Spanish Fork Dons, the Pioneers need this to solidify a spot in the playoff picture which begins Oct. 28. The loss to Spanish Fork may prove very costly to the Pioneers as starting quarterback sophomore Braden Cooper was seriously injured early in the second half with a severely sprained ankle and will only be able to return to the lineup "Svhen he feels that he can stand the pain," according to Coach Several holding penalties and a sack didn't help the Pioneer cause. The team totaled 277 yards for the night with 140 on the ground and 137 through the air. Fork edged the Spanish Pioneers with 289 total yards, 180 in the air and 109 on the run. Coach Everett Kelepolo showed some real class when his first concern at the end of the game was to visit Cooper on the sideline before he went in to the locker room to talk with his players. Jason Smith was Lehi's top ground gainer with 64 yards on nine carries; he had two runs of 20 yards. Casey Vanderhoef totaled 49 on 13 carries to go with Cooper's seven-yar- d 14-1- 27. . .Chad. Wilson. ,; Cooper accounted for 27 rushing yards and 122 passing yards before he went down on Lebi's first series of the third quarter. He had engineered two first downs and was inside the Don's 20 with 8 minutes left in the period when he injured his ankle. Alan Sargent was rushed into action at that point, but the team seemed to have lost their confidence as they were only able to gain 19 yards the rest of the game. Defensively, Lehi had a trio of fumble recoveries by Adam Kolowich, Weston Groll and Tyler Turner which turned Don gains to Lehi's advantage. After Lehi scored on Kolowich's field goal to pull within four at the talented cornerback recovered a fumbled pass to start the Pioneers on their second real drive of the night. The Dons had moved to Lehi's 10 where the fumble occurred. Fifteen plays later the Pioneers went ahead 10-- 7 after Smith ran 32-ya- 7-- 3, for 43 and Vanderhoef tacked on 23 plus a couple of passes and 25 yards by Cooper. Lehi's Groll recovered a Don touchmuff after the down, but Lehi returned the favor when Spanish Fork intercepted Cooper's pass on the first play. The Pioneers were threatening again with 1:41 left in the half, but time ran out after they had moved the ball 62 yards. Coach Wilson is confident about the battle with the Carbon Dinosaurs set for 7 p.m. Friday. He expects the visitors to play tough, power football both offensively and defensively. He commented that they come at you with nine players on the line sometimes and have a sound running game. Carbon lost 49-- 0 to Logan last week and share the third-plac- e spot with the Pioneers with identical 2 league marks and 4 over3-- The 7th Grade cheerleaders will be cheering at the championship football game on I Saturday, Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. in American Fork.
