Destry couldn't attend because she was at Brigham Young University that night receiving her first place plaque in the State Reflection's Contest for her chalk illustration titled "Dare to Discover ... Through Reading." Only the top 20 state winners were honored last Friday at BYU's Skyroom. The Reflections Contest excepts entrants from elementary age students through high school and divides the art contest into several categories, including music, writing, and different visual medias. The competition begins at the student's local school in the fall; goes onto the local regional judging, then to the state, and finally to the national competition. There were over 60,000 entries in the annual 1995 Reflections contest competition in Utah. Destry was the only entrant in the kindergarten through second grade class that went on to the national competition. Except, according to Destry and her family, her artwork almost didn't even make it to the local competition. It seems that Destry didn't really care for her depiction of a pirate ship with its crew searching for lost treasure. Below the ship, at the bottom of the sea, is a treasure chest full of books and off to the side is a mermaid, stealing away with a book under her arm. So the threw her attempt eight year-ol- d in the trash. "She threw it in the garbage - ' 0r ff I - - . The owner was also charged with possession, of paraphernalia and open container vio- lation. One of the passengers was also booked into the jail for possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, possession of paraphernalia and carrying a concealed weapon. Another passenger exited the vehicle and vomited, after which she had trouble breathing. She was transported to an American Fork clinic by the ambulance, where she was treated. The United States Postal Service reported $250 in damages to a postal vehicle. The case is still under investigation. The Final Day... Destry Dawns took first place in the State Reflections Contest but not before she threw her entry in the trash two different times because it wasn't good," confessed her mother Lari Downs. "Dallas would fish it out and make her work on it some more." Her older sister Dallas kept encouraging her sister throughout the two week struggle. Destry's other brothers and sisters also got two days before the into the act local Reflection's Contest Deadline. Still in spite of procrastination, by the time the local awards were done being given out, three Downs' children had won honorable mentions or better. Along with her first place trophy that she won at Meadow Elementary, she has a regional plaque. The state award was an inset clock in a red apple statue set on a grey plaque. What does Destry think of the fuss and notoriety? "Well, at first I wasn't sure I wanted to win," claims the second grader, "but now I like it. I got to go to the Lehi library and get my picture taken when I won a plaque."
