Pioneers win two, lose one in opening tournament By ROD MANTOR For a team that has only had three full practice sessions, the Pioneers looked very good on their first outing. They played in a tournament in St. George; winning two and loosing one and advancing to the championship round. Lehi played Snow Canyon for the season opener and won, Mike Gray and Brian Mantor both drove in two runs each, Mike Schneider and Matt Felix drove in one each.. Matt was also the start ingpitch-ehe went for three innings. Brock Jones relieved for three and Brian Mantor finished the last. Travis Neil had a great day hitting as well as catching behind the plate. He was named the team's most valuable player. Head coach Lynn Allan made this statement: "I thought for our first game we did quite well. The defense was probably our strongest aspect, and I was more than satisfied with the pitching." Game two was against Emery. Jason Allan was the starting pitcher and he went the full distance. He had a one hitter going for six innings before fatigue got him a little. He then let runners get in scoring position, but he regained his momentum and left the last batter 6-- 4. r, looking down a curve ball. An outstanding effort at any point in the season. Itwasagoodpitchingmatch as neither team could get on track v as far as scoring. Lehi had a couple of threats; Curtis Jacobsen had a single and Mike Gray hit a deep ball to center which appeared to be dropped, but was ruled a fair catch. Matt Felix took a shot and was given first base, Travis Neil walked and Chad Yates cracked one up the middle but Emery turned the play. Then Emery looked like they were going to come on, but some outstanding plays by Matt Felix, Curtis Jacobsen and Adam Olsen kept them from getting the hits. Inning five looked like Lehi was going to start another rally when Adam Olsen laid down a perfect bunt and put runners at first and second, but back to back grounders held Lehi scoreless again. Then the bottom of the sixth, Curtis Jacobsen walked and Mike Gray blasted one over the center 0 field fence ( that's about Travis and Felix Matt feet). tripled Neil singled and Lehi went up Emery came back with one run to Jason Allan end the scoring was MVP for this game. The third game was against Dixie and they are a good team. It all M,f 3-- 1, 1 v1?t I i 11 came down to one factor; they were hitting and Lehi was not. They took the Pioneers 9-- 1. Lehi saw some new pitching by Greg Degelbeck and Jason Yates. Both really did a pretty good job despite the score. The single RBI was brought in by Curtis Jacobsen. Mike Gray was the MVP for this game. Thechampionship round: Rained out! Lehi has 11 returning seniors and this is going to be a team to reckon with. Pioneers end successful season...
