Carter was recently presented with a Certificate of Appreciation at the Possibilities Unlimited Inclusion Conference held for the Alpine, Provo and Nebo school districts. In addition, she also received a $100 cash award provided by NuSkin International, which she donated to the special education department at the school. Previously she had also been named as Employment Advocate of the Year for Utah County by the Association of Retarded Children. As a Transition Specialist, she coordinates employment opportunities and living opportunities -such as completing work tasks, applying for a job, shopping, going for intellectually out to lunch that everyone has something to contribute to society, she said. "I think employers need to understand that." The program starts with class LHS band Lehi High School, under the direction of Carl Dastrup, recently hosted the region jazz band festival and received a superior rating and qualified for the state meet, one of only two groups (with Park City) to qualify. The saxophone section was named top sax section. Craig Loveridge named outstanding saxophone soloist and Calvin Rasmussen was named outstanding drum soloist. Bill Orton announced recently that a Lehi High School senior he nominated last year has been appointed to West Point Military Academy. "Lane P. Cutler has been appointed for his unique qualifications and because those qualifications identify him as one of America's potential future leaders," Orton said. "As a Congressman, I have seen firsthand the power of one person to influence the course our country takes. Each individual has the power to influence the course of our nation. My generation looks to youths like Lane as the hope of the future." Lane has excelled in academics, scoring exceptionally high on the American College Test. A member of the National Honor Society, he is enrolled in three Advanced Placement courses - English, history and calculus. "Lane has strong leadership abilities and exhibits these abilities in various school activities," said Brenda Peterson, an AP and honors English teacher at LHS. "Lane would always strive to do his best in any situation and he would be a welcome addition to West Point." In addition to his scholastic achievements, Lane serves as the senior class president. He is an Eagle Scout and represented his school last summer at Boys State. He also is involved in band, honor choir, Spanish Club and community service projects. Lane has lettered in baseball, football, wrestling and track. He was a member of the national championship 4x100 relay e team . Lane also works in a local grocery store. As part of Melanie's academic pursuits, she has received the National English Merit Award, Hope of America Award, and is listed in Who's Who Among American High School Students.
