Lehi, on the other hand, steps up two classifications to play with the big boys. With only five returning starters, the Pioneers are comparatively inexperienced. Line coach Chad Wilson feels that his offensive line is "pretty good" and that the home squad has good receivers. Quarterbacking chores in the Lehi camp are still a question mark even though Coach Jeff Kilts had a good look at Rylan Barney, Matt Felix, Braden Cooper and Jeff Berg last Saturday in the Purple-Whit- e Heather Lund, one of Lehi's top netters, lobs a forehand in Lehi-Amatch. F Girls tennis opens with young team to Uintah Sept. 15, to Park City Sept 20, and at home against North Sanpete Sept. 21. The Region 10 tournament is planned for Sept. 24, and two final tune-u- p matches will bring Grantsville and Springville to town Sept. 27 and Sept. 29. State is scheduled for Oct. 1. The Lehi girls will have their work cut out for them this year, but Wofford is certainly looking to a successful future with the young squad and only one senior. By TRACY WILSON After losing nearly his entire startinglineup to graduation, Coach Alan Wofford is still optimistic about Lehi High School's girls' tennis team's chances in the region and state net wars. Last yearns squad brought home the silver second-plactrophy from state last fall. The Lady Pioneers hosted American Fork's Lady Cavemen last opener Thursday in a with a somewhat depleted and very young team. Wofford sees one freshman and five sophomores in the top 13, e scrimmage. There's a pre-seas- Flag football seven spots. Freshman Nicole Downs was not available for the AF match, but looks like the to her sister's spot at number one singles. The five sophomores include Shannon Urry, currently number two on the squad; Mandy Hadfield and Heather Lund, apparent first doubles; Rachael Bailey, third singles and Haley Russon who should fight it out with Jamie Robinson, the only senior on the team, and juniors Emily Smith and Amy Dorton for the second doubles spots. Lehi returned the home and home series with American Fork yesterday at AF and will travel to Spanish Fork tomorrow for a 3:30 Always a key match p.m. match-up- . of the season, the Lady Pioneers then head for Grantsville and the Cowboys on Aug. 30. Their final tune-uto region is scheduled for Aug. 3 1 when they host perennially tough Manti. Region net wars begin Sept. 6 when Uintah brings its competitive team to Lehi. The girls will have had their fill of tennis by the end of the week, having played Uintah, and then Park City at home Sept. 7, at Pine View Sept. 8, and the Pine View Invitational Sept. After a weekendbreak, they will be back on the road to Manti Sept. sign-up- s heir-appare- announced Sign-up- for s the Lehi City Flag Football program will be held Tuesday, Aug. 30; Thursday, Sept. 1; and Wednesday, Sept 7 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Lehi Public Library, 120 N. In addition to the depth at quarterback, the Pioneers tout several good receivers andreasonably depth out of the backfield. Fans were able to see Don Worthington, Jeff Filimoehala and Brock Jones run Saturday. Casey Vanderhoef and Josh Heath, both expected to see a lot of action this season, did not play. Heath was out of town and Vanderhoef is nursing an injured hand. Felix was on the receiving end of several of Cooper's passes, and Tom Lewis scored on Berg's J v J By TRACY WILSON As in the past few years, the Lehi High' School football team jumps straight into the fire with its traditional opener against American Fork this Friday, Aug. 26 at home; game time is 7:30 p.m. The Cavemen are boasting their best team in several years with a big line, a 5 A sprint champion in Joel Jorgensen, a blitzing defense, and lots of experience from last intra-squa- d J second-quarte- r aerial in the scrimmage game to lead. In give the White squad an the second half, Cary Turner sprinted 45 yards to put the Purple team in scoring range and then Jacob Rhodes raced in from the 35 to score the touchdown and run six points up on the scoreboard, but the failed and the White crew won One specially bright spot was 8-- 0 8-- the kicking of senior Calvin Rasmussen. In an attempt to push the Purple team past the White, Rasmussen set up for a field goal attempt from the 35 and easily made the distance but was just wide of the goalposts. He has been able to kick consistently from the range, according to Wilson. 50-yar- d f I if Mil V 4 S f 1 v. i - Brock Jones, Lehi running back, springs around Purple defense in Saturday's intra-squascrimmage as part of Meet The Team Night. Matt Felix moves in to stop Jones. Defense appears to be a strong point of the Pioneer game this year with Chad Young, Colby Harris, Lewis, Will Stewart, Mike Wing, Jake Gillen, Mitch Linford and Tyler Turner earning the coaches' nods for Saturday's effort. Judging by the low score of the scrimmage game, one would assume that the defensive teams on both sides of the ball were very stingy. Coach Kilts acknowledged that there were some rough spots in the battle, but felt that the boys played well, especially when you consider that they had split the varsity-junio- r varsity squads for this practice game to end the workouts. He was especially complimentary of Worthington, Filimoehala and Jones, who all played both offense and defense. A host of new coaches will be assisting the veterans, Kilts, Wilson and Tony McGeary. McGeary has been singled out to steer the JV team. He will be assisted by Ray Linford, line assistant to Wilson, andby Lonny Magnusson.Dan Rice, Lehi's new wrestling coach, will work mostly with the receivers and defensive backs both at the JV and varsity level but will head the sophomore program. Rice and McGeary will also be assisted by Dave Morris, defensive specialist who plans to work with the linebacker corp, by Danny Pekus, DBs and running backs, Magnusson on the defensive line, and Cole Cooper, sophomore team and receivers. lif SECURITY State Farm has the highest strength ratings from financial A.M. But reading the hometown weekly is d meal you don't want to like eating a good a miss thing." We sometimes wonder what it would be like to subscribe to a national news service and just pick and choose which stories to run. But that's why you can read the same story in the Salt Lake papers the Daily Herald or the Utah County Journal - sometimes they're word for word. Our news is original. It's made from scratch with real ingredients. It's about real people that you probably know. And we vary the recipe for each local community. Our kind of news requires a greater investment of time, money and effort, and more cooperation from our readers. Most of the time our kind of stories aren't important enough to make the 10:00 o'clock news and very few of them are picked up by other newspapers. We publish what no one else can. In our area that's why we have 50 more paid subscribers than the Daily Herald and over twice as many as both Salt Lake papers combined. We have more total circulation than the Utah County Journal.
