Show Fifth ward gets plaque denoting historic significance The Lehi Fifth Ward building, originally constructed as a church, later used as a municipal building and a theater facility, has received a significant honor despite its uncertain future: the buildinghas been named to the National Register of Historic Places. Although the building has been listed on the register since 1992, it only recently received a plaque denoting its heritage. The plaque recognizes that the building is one of the few remaining examples of the meetinghouses in America, as well as the fact that the plan was designed by grandsons of Brigham Young. The plaque also claims that the built by local artisans building supported by volunteer labor is "a monument to pioneer craftsmanship and cooperation." On Feb. 29, 1920, the Fifth Ward was created as the 800th ward in the LDS Church. In 1921, Bishop Andrew Fjeld was instrumental in purchasing the property on the northwest corner of 100 East and 100 North from Helen Comer for - Groundbreaking did not begin, however, Until Feb. 1, 1928, under the direction of the new bishop, Virgil H. Peterson. The building was completed by Dec. 20, 1928 and a ward conference was held in the facility. Though the order produced 520 gallons of molasses that first year, internal strife developed. "There' has' been considerable dissatisfaction and fault finding with someof the Brethren who joined the United Order," wrote William Yates; "things hasn't worked quite as smoothely as we could wish." The 1875 season was much more successful with over 1,200 gallons of molasses being produced by the order. Brigham Young arrived byrail in Lehi on Aug. 9, 1874, to deliver a on sermon keynote communitarianism in the Lehi Meetinghouse. The eminent man urged Church members to "deed every particle of property that we instituhave got to this our houses, farms, sheep, tion cattle, horses, our labor, our railroad stock, bank stock, factories, and everything that we have we can deed to the trustees of this association. Whatever you have here in Lehi that you wish to deed over to those you have selected to be aboard of trustees you can deed to them to take the supervision of it, and then you will put it out of the hands perhaps of unruly forward children and spendthrifts . . . More Christmas-relate- d crimi- nal mischief occurred when presents valued at approximately $ 100 were taken from a vehicle. The presents were intended for a little boy. A Lehi resident reported damage to three sheep by dogs; the sheep were so badly mutilated that they had to be destroyed. City officials involved in the project include Mary Van Wagoner, left, Richard Van Wagoner, Mayor Ron Smith and John Rockwell. The Depression made the debt of $47,556.97 difficult to satisfy, and the building was not fully paid until late 1936. Dedicatory services were held on Feb. 28, 1937 under the direction of President Heber J. Grant. Part of the prayer included the following: "We dedicate the ground upon approximately one acre from RA-- 1 to R--l at about 645 E. Cedar Hollow Rd. Councilmember Haws made a motion on Ray Lamoreaux's request for extension of time on his annexation request regarding property at about 700 South that Mr. Lamoreaux conclude the matter within 30 days or be denied. In light of the amount of water coming from State Street toward the intersection of 1500 North and Trinnaman Lane, Kent Davis asked if the city had inspected the sewer line in the area. Public Works Director Bob Kunz said that the city does not inspect lines located on private property and that that particular area had not been inspected for that reason. City Attorney Ken Rushton said the subdivision approval process is the forum to resolve such drainage issues, and a lengthy discussion of the matter followed. Dudley suggested that the pipes west of Trinnaman Lane be cleaned out or upgraded at least feet west of the intersection. Councilmember Haws asked Yates ifhe would be willing to share in the cost of that solution; Yates declined, and reminded the council that he had given rights of way for the power department to run a line through his property. (He said a neighboring property 100-20- 0 owner received $15,000 compensation for his right of way, but that he had refused a possible $10,000 for his portion.)
