John Goddard, renowned explorer, visits with a friend from his travels. Goddard presented a lecture on the importance of setting goals. Explorer stresses goals to junior high students By JAN GRABERT Ninth grader at Lehi Junior High As a boy of 15, this man wrote a list of 127 amazing goals. He has accomplished an astounding 107 of these goals already. His list ranged from becoming an Eagle Scout and typing 50 words a minute to exploring the Nile River (he led the first expedition to the Nile) and climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. Other goals he has accomplished include exploring the depths of the seas, including the Great Barrier Reef, the Bahamas and the Ever900 glades. He has flown a 5 miles an hour over Lehi. On June 25 of next year he is traveling to Africa again. On Dec. 14, John Goddard, world famous explorer, visited Lehi Junior High School. According to what he told ninth graders at Lehi, he attributes part of his success to a fifth grade teacher who interested him in books. He also believes setting goals at an early age is what helped him accomplish such astounding feats. According to a study conducted in America, only two in 100 adults write goals. Goddard said for these people "each day is a carbon copy of the day before." F-1- He also feels children need to do something to invest in their future. His advice to children is to "turn off that dumb TV set!" "There are only two great riches in life friendship and health," states Goddard. And the most important investment? Not in a house of car, but for Goddard it is the investment in oneself. He says after a person takes an interest in - their future, "they have a positive influence.. .Go for the positive." He suggests writing six goals tonight before going to bed including something you would probably never think of doing to accomplish before next year, something kind for a person, and something you could accomplish in a week, such as cleaning out your closet. An important part of setting goals is keeping them in balance. "No matter what you can do in life, there's always someone who can do it better." He believes someone should keep trying even if they already do it well. John Goddard has traveled many million miles, but he attributes his success to making goals. He believes goals are important and challenges everyone to start. By BRENDA T.
