The children did not want for material possessions, but the parents were rather aloof and left the rearing of the seven children to servants. Reviewers describe them as "an English couple with some splendid upper-clas- s eccentricities"; "somewhat lovable, if expletive, father"; "charmingly eccentric mother." Comments from the children: "I regarded my parents with very little awe and some affection." "Father was a man of violent passions and prejudices, the terror of servants and children unlucky enough to trigger unpredictable outbursts." "My parentshavebeen described as eccentric, although I did not consider them so - perhaps because it is impossible to imagine one's own parents being any different than they are." "Mother was cold, strict, unapproachable, a person to whom one could never open one's heart or confide one's dreams. Her 'patrician reserve' held no peculiar charms for me." In her book "Daughters and Rebels," a witty autobiography, Jessica tells of her feisty girlhood as one of the famousnotorious daughters and of her combat training with a roaring father, "one of Nature's Fascists." She refers to her mother as Security, Safety, a Guaranteed Income for as long as you live... The Mitford children at Asthall, 1926, flanked by Muv and Farve. Later she went to the U.S., joined the Communist Party before World War II, and became an influential writer and social critic. In fact five of the daughters left a mark on the world through their literary, social, or political activities. Nancy, a comic novelist wrote at least seven books. Diana, a great social beauty of the 20s, was leader of "The Bright Young Things" and married -- millionaire people confused by conflicting ideologies. Although Hitler was obsessed byhis dream of cleansing Europe of Jews, whom he blamed for Germany's losing the war and for the disintegration of the economic structure of his homeland, he inspired widespread adoration and was the hope and ideal of millions. From the moment Hitler kissed her hand, Unity became a dedicated advocate of National Socialism. Hitler had never met anyone like this gay, irrepressible, d (Adolf s perfect nordic type) girl who would make blunt and surprising remarks. Her freedom of expression, original outlook on life, and lively humor (which she shared with her five sisters) was a new and refreshing experience to him. He delighted in her company, and it was rumored that she was his mistress, but that was unfounded. What he sought was the stimulation that his suppressed bohemian nature craved. With his ri se to power, he foun d many women eager for his company and they were often included in the circle of his advisers. Eva Braun seemed to be his only mistress; he did not marry her for he would lose too many female votes. In the summer of 1936, at the Wagner Festival, Frau Wagner suggested invitingUnity and her sister Diana to luncheon. According to Friedelind Wagner, a delighted Hitler confided, "You know Unity Bryan Guinness and (seven years later) Sir Oswald Mosley, founder of the British Union of Fascists. Deborah, the youngest sister, by marriage became the mistress of the venerable English estate, Chatsworth. golden-haire- I found little about the two other siblings, except that Pam lived in Switzerland for a time; and Tom, "the only member of the family to always be on speaking terms with everyone else," was killed in Burma towards the end of the war. Unity's association with Hitler Unity grew up in this family and rebelled against the English social and political structure, as did most ofthe others. Headlines once said that she was called "a little wild by her sister" (Jessica.) The following notes are from "Hitler," by John Toland, 1976. Unity had just "come out" in England and was in Munich attending art classes when she becamecaught up in the excitement of the "new" "Mother started us to read at the age of five, then to the schoolroom, presided over by a succession of governesses." Jessica wanted to go to the state grammar school and take science courses. Buther mother said "What nonsen se. No, of course you can't go to the grammar school," and her face turned to "disapproving stone." Lucky Tom was sent to Eton. The most important was the British Union of Fascists, the Blackshirts. In 1938, Hitler sent an important coworker to England to gain information.
