She explained that the Relief Society had its own welfare system on an individual ward basis. The sisters collected fast offerings and distributed the goods where needed," she said. As the history specialist for the organization, Mrs. Anderson was asked to compile the information as part of the Relief Society's celebration. Using stake records, clippings from newspapers, previously published histories of Lehi and personal accounts of former presidents, the project now includes several sections. "The biggest challenge was deciding what to cut," she said. The local Relief Society organization on a stake level started with the Alpine Stake and included wards in Lehi, American Fork and Pleasant Grove and the surrounding communities. With the creation of the Lehi Stake from the Alpine Stake, the history shows how the community has grown from the original four wards to the division into additional wards and stakes. year-lon- g Emma G. Phillips, secretary treasurer of the Lehi Stake Relief Society in its early years, started a ledger in 1868 to preserve the history of the group. From that time, each ward submitted forms to the stake, who then submitted them to the Relief Society general board. The forms were discontinued in the 1940's and left the recordkeeping to the wards. Although the book focuses on the Lehi Stake Relief Society, readers can also see the time when the original stake was divided to form the Lehi North Stake. Reports of events show that the community now includes the Lehi West Stake as well. In addition to copies of old forms for recordkeeping, the book also includes pictures of past leaders, activities and other items of local interest, such as bazaars, poetry contests and women's conferences. The history shows the development in the organization and administration of program, including technological changes that make the benefits of Relief Society avail- fare, bazaars and making burial clothing for the dead in the stake. The sisters were also responsible for raising their own fun ds for Kitchen Appliances Towels, Linen Comforters, Blankets Glassware, Cookwear Just call to include your name American Fork 756-474- Colorado.
