What many of us fail to realize is that "allergy" is not a disease; it is a condition in which an individual responds negatively to a substance that does not affect most people adversely. We tend to dismiss allergies as minor irritations, yet they can range from the swollen eyes of hayfever to severe asthma attacks and anaphylaxis. Because allergy symptoms can be both uncomfortable and potentially traditional medical treatment consists of symptomatic relief. Nasal sprays, for example, may temporarily relieve hayfever congestion, but they ultimately irritate nasal passages. When systemic medications such as steroids and cortisone are used, already deficient adrenal glands arc further depleted, leading to increased susceptibility to allergies. The chiropractic solution for allergies consists not in the suppression of symptoms but in the detection and treatment of the cause. Rex F. Ainge Alberta G.
