Show Citizen, Press, Review - WeL. Aug. 8, 1990 . Page 16 , Cats should be vaccinated If you have ever had a pet cat suffer with feline leukemia, you probably know first hand that the disease is the number one killer of cats both locally and throughout the United States today. You also probably found out you could have saved your pet if you had had him (or her) vaccinated against the disease. Cats are pets in one in four American households. "These deaths are sad and unnecessary," say veterinarians at the Timpanogos Animal Hospital and the AJ. Pet Clinic. "A simple vaccination program can protect cats from this contagious, incurable and often fatal disease." If a cat becomes permanently infected with the feline leukem, it will probably die within three years. Feline leukemia, the veterianar-in- s explained, is really a complex of diseases caused by the feline leukemia virus. Leukemia, an increased multiplication of white blood cells, is actually less common than other diseases associated with the More often, the virus causes non- - cancerous internal disorders and weakens the immune system, leaving the cat susceptible to various infections. The virus usually spreads through contact between cats, Dr. Lafe Parrish said. The virus is shed in the saliva, urine and feces. Mutual grooming and sharing of food and water bowls and litter boxes are the most likely ways the virus is transmitted from one cat to another. The disease can be up to 10 times more common in households with more than one cat," Parrish says. "Cats that spend time outdoors are also more susceptible. Even single indoor cats can contract the disease if they slip outside and come in contact with the virus." Infected cats often show general signs of illness that may include loss of appetite, weight loss, vomit- ing, diarrhea and weakness. Fever and mouth ulcers also suggest the disease. "Whenever we see a cat with inexplicable illness, we suspect feline NEATNESS IS OUR MOTTO- Plan Now For Your Own 2nd leukemia. We can test for it, but we can't cure it." Cats can be infected for months or years before showing symptoms. But once permanently infected, they have an 80 percent chance of dying, he adds. An infected cat should be isolated from others to prevent the spread of infection. As the cat begins to show symptoms, it can be treated to reduce its discomfort. However, the disease is considered incurable and treatment can do little more than briefly extend the cat s ' , Dick's Glass Co. Your Family's Future! "Newly available feline leukemia vaccines help prevent this terrible disease. That means less suffering for cats and less sorrow for their owners," Parrish says. He urges all cat owners to consult their veterinarian about feline leukemia and how the disease can be diagnosed and prevented.
