These were the thoughts that occupied his mind as the ferry moved slowly towards the opposite shore. The smartly dressed man had dismounted from the black horse in preparation for boarding the ferry. "Good morning to you," Port said, as the ferry bumped into shore. The handsome stranger responded in kind. He was a middle-age- d man, alert and intelligent-lookinwith a healthy head of wavy hair and a warm smile. Porter liked the friendly stranger. Port pushed a long pole into the soft mud on the river side of the ferry, wedging the craft tightly against the bank. When the stranger had led the nervous horse on board, Port pulled the pole out of the mud and signalled for, Luana to lead the mare back to the launching platform. As she did so, raft began to move. " 'Bout time someone put a ferry on the Big Blue," said the stranger. "Can't say I ever enjoyed getting wet, especially when the water's so cold. Is business good?" "Very good," Port responded. '" 'Tween the migration and the Mormons, expect a grand summer." "Understand there's over a in Jackson thousand Mormons County," the stranger said. "Only about 900," Port said. "But more's coming, lots more. Maybe another thousand this year." "Why so many?" "Joseph says Jackson County is Zion, the gathering place for the Saints. That's what Mormons call themselves." "Any niggers coming with them?" "Some free ones, maybe. But not many slaves. Joseph teaches against slavery." "Take The Heat Off With A Deluxe Day & Night Air Conditioner And A '200. Rebate." "But Missouri is a slave state." "The Mormon Church is not a slave church." "A thousand more this year," Boggs said, changing the subject. "That's a lot of votes." "Lot of what?" Port asked, not understanding. "Votes, like in the ballot box." "You a politician?" Port asked, as the raft bumped into shore. He steadied the craft with the long pole while the stranger led his horse onto the bank. When Port jumped to shore, the stranger extended his hand. "Please excuse me for not introducing myself," he said. "The name's Lilburn Boggs, lieutenant governor of this great state. And who might you be?" "Porter Rockwell, sir. Pleased to meet you. The ferry fare is five cents." Boggs reached into his pocket and handed Port a dime, telling the young man to keep the change. "I'll tell you a secret if you'll keep your mouth shut," said Boggs after he had climbed onto the black horse. "Someday I'll be governor of the state of Missouri. You just wait and see." "I will," Port said. Boggs tipped his hat to Luana, who was standing beside the sorrel mare about ten yards off. Then he pulled his horse around and galloped up the road. Port liked the stranger and hoped he would indeed become governor of Missouri. He turned to Luana, who was just standing there, hands on hips, a bright smile on her face. He hoped she had forgotten the reading lessons, but didn't think she had.
