Show Free Press - Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1987 - Page 8 " I If you can find a lower New runner adds pizazz to cross country team The first week of school is always recruiting time for Coach Jim Howe as he extolls the virtues and fun of cross country running to any student who'll listen. Howe speaks to ninth grade P.E. classes, hands out flyers and makes announcements on the school p.a. system in an attempt to get reluctant students to give the grueling sport just one try. Usually,if he can get students to try just one practice, they'll have a good experience and join the team. Howe was thrilled when, on his first day of school, one of Lehi's most reknown runners, Bonnie Wadley, reported to practice. Howe first met Wadley last spring when freshman, Sam Wadley, was playing on the varsity soccer team. Mrs. Wadley seemed to be at every game, no matter how far away or how bad the weather. How noticed that she had a beautiful spirit that let the young people know how much she cared, and he realized that she'd be a great cross country coach. Although Howe does his best and has taken the team to the state championships almost every year, he is the first to admit that he is not a runner and gets tired simply watching the sport. When asked several years ago by Principal Neil Christensen to be the coach, Howe was a new teacher of just one week's experience, but he could think of no other response than, "Yes, sir." Wadley, who has been running Lehi's streets for years, brings a wealth of experience and skill to the team. Last Friday, the team tackled it's course in a demanding three-mil- e through the practice race. Half-wa- y course is a seemingly stretch of pavement that straight-u- p presents one of the steepest crosscountry hills in the state. Over the years Lehi has hosted y teams, many premier but there have been few athletes who have been able to run the length of the hill without stopping to walk. Wadley told team members before the race that it's not the leg muscles, but rather the mind that gets you up the hill, and that she wanted everyone to run to the top with no walking. When two runners slowed to a walk half-wa- y up, she took each by the arm and ran them in a threesome to the top. 100-yar- d, cross-countr- Most runners upon attaining the summit, breathe a sigh of relief and continue on the easier part of the course, but not Wadley. She turned around, ran back to the bottom and grabbed the arm of another youngster and ran him to the top. The day before, a sudden downpour caught the team off guard. The faster runners had already returned to the warmth and shelter of the She school, but not Wadley. remained on the course until all the drenched runners were in. For Wadley's enthusiasm is contagious and more and more students keep joining the team. New team members ae still welcome to join. And remember, being fat or a good athlete is not a requirement. Slowpokes and students who say, "I can't run" are encouraged to come out and give cross country running a try. Indeed, at Friday's practice race it was the slowest runners who got the most cheers and hugs upon crossing the finish line. Howe was worried that one ninth become might girl grade discouraged because she was one of the last to finish the race. He was relieved when she called that night to say that she was having a good time and to ask if her friend could join the team. Ninth grade girls have always been the key to the team s success, and Howe hopes more will join the team this week. All they have to do is show up to practice at 3 p.m. at his room (No. 9) at the high school. Interested students will find that cross country is a great sport for those who want to have fun, make new friends, and be part of a team regardless of their athletic ability.
