Show Free Press - Wednesday, April 1. 1987 - Page S Kay Nielsen earns Eagle Kay Bernon Nielsen, a seventh Lehi Junior High School, was awarded his Eagle badge in a recent ceremony. Kay has lived all of his life in the 12th Ward. He attended Lehi Elementary School where his grandfather taught for many years. grader in the Kay earned the Arrow of Light Award in Cub Scouts and earned all of the Webelos activity badges. Kay Vernon is now in the Deacon's presidency in his ward and is presently the senior patrol leader of his troop and a den chief for a Cub den. He led Scouts of his troop in painting parking lines around the south and west sides of the Lehi Swimming Pool for his Eagle service project. The new Eagle Scout fulfilled a desire by having his older brothers, who are also Eagles and members of the Order of the Arrow, present his Eagle Feather to him. Sfi I , t long-await- Kay Nielsen 'Music Man' receives excellent reviews Lehi High School's production of "Music Man" deserved the accolades and standing ovations it received following performances Friday, Saturday and Monday evenings. Glen Smith proved, once again, that such a gigantic effort as a production like "Music Man" can be accomplished. The large number of cast members, all often on the stage at the same time, would require an immense amount of patience and control, yet Smith and the cast carried out the staging without a hitch. The acting and singing talents of Hans Rasmussen and Janet Wilson won the audience from the opening scene to the conclusion of a delightful evening of entertainment. In fact, after curtain calls, a member of the appreciative audience asked, "Where did that soprano come from?" It was exciting to witness a star's unveiling, and Janet Wilson's star is just beginning to rise. She was sensational in her role as Marion Paroo, the librarian. Rasmussen lacked the energetic performance one thinks of after Robert Preston's inimitable "Music Man," but he showed a maturity and poise beyond his years in his portrayal of the flamboyant Music Man. Others in the cast were balievable from the and opening scene which featured the traveling salesman traveling in the bandtrain, to the adorably-abl- e smen in their classy uniforms and toting their shiny new instruments. Scott Dyreng as Maracellus d, Winthrop, also deserves a word of praise. His solo, especially, was excellent. To those of you who didn't see and hear "Music Man," you missed a treat (and treat, a home-grow- n that's the best kind.) Janet is a senior at Lehi High and in the Sterling is a Scholar competition. You can easily see why. She was just outstanding. r, Hans Rasmussen, Her talented and intelligent, (he didn't muff a line), also helped carry the musical to it's happy climax. We hear every year that Glen Smith is planning to retire. We sincerely hope not. He has an uncanny knack in revealing talent in students who didn't even believe in themselves prior to their acting stint in a Lehi High musical. Glen is like a perennial flower that blooms each year whether we're watching and listening or not. He deserves to be honored for his devotion to the students, and for his unflagging efforts in behalf of those students and Lehi High School. He's one of a kind, the very best kind. Washborn and Janalee Smith as Marian's mother, were excellent, and Jason Draper's Mayor Shinn and Leah Dinehart as Mrs. Shinn, deserved plaudits for their inof the humourous terpretations characters. The Buffalo Bills quartet sounded like the Mills Brothers, and the ladies deserve academy awards for their gossipy roles, and their dancing wasn't bad, either. A great deal of credit must go to Kevin Cox, the band director, for conjuring up a creditable orchestra for the production. And, it was more than a"think" effort. Cox is bringing music back to Lehi High, and he deserves thanks and appreciation for his untiring work. After a year or two of taped accompaniment, the orchestra's efforts added a great deal to the production. A tip of the hat should also go to the stage and lighting crews who performed their tasks with a minimum of noise and time.
