Hold on to your hats: Pioneers Lehi's superior height was just too much a factor for the smaller Hawks as they fought to get back into the game. They finally hit from outside, but calton retaliated by hitting after a nice assist from Price. He added one from the line for the play. Scott Peck scored and the Hawks missed from the line. Let the good times roll seemed to be Lehi's theme, but they became careless and missed six shots right under the basket, and then North Sanpete hit two from the charity Peters made the score 0 by tanking one after a rebound and then Scott Price swished one from just inside the three-poimarker, then hit another goal to ante Lehi's score up to 20. Peters showed bis quickness in handling the ball and then Price hit two from the line. The 0 score was a preview of things to come as Redmond added a goal after a nice Veach assist. Lehi's good zone defense kept the Hawks off balance and they missed from the charity stripe. Redmond hit from underneath and Veach added two more points. The It was open season for shooting down the North Sanpete Hawks, in the Pioneers hunting expedition in Friday night's tournament game. In downing the Hawks, the Pioneers earned the right to battle a tough crew from Tooele in the championship round of Lehi's Thanksgiving Tournament. Tooele beat Grants ville in the first game of the tourney . Lehi guard, Scott Price opened the scoring for Lehi but the Hawks had already showed Lehi they meant business by stealing the ball and scoring a layup. Their three-poiattempt failed and then Price hit his first field goal of the game. rule added The new three-poiexcitement to the games, as players weren't bashful about tossing the ball in from outside. Matt Calton and Matt Redmond, s, scored two of Lehi's before the Hawks tanked one from the line. Calton also hit from the charity stripe to give Lehi a slim 5 lead with 4 : 12 to go in the first canto. Fans who attended the shoot-ou- t enjoyed the performance of Al d Peters, the Pioneers' 6'2" Samoan connection. He got in on the scoring act with a beauty which ignited Calton who scored six in a row. Steve Veach hit from the line and the Pioneers were off and running. 18-1- 32-1- 0. nt 24-1- stripe. 1 Triple-Tower- ,1 Calton and Peters scored for Lehi, and then, showing a patience and tenacity, stole the ball. The Hawks fouled trying to get the ball back and Scott Price went to the line and bit both. Lehi had missed a couple of fast break opportunities, but Doug Webb came off the bench to hit on a fst break try. The Pioneers went to the dressing rooms at halftime with a 0 lead. When play resumed, Peters scored on Price's assist but North Sanpete got even by hitting a goal. Several turnovers spoiled the smoothness of the game before Calton got the scoring underway 47-2- were Hawks now getting 68-3- Redmond tanked one from underneath but the Hawks tossed in a Peters hit, Lehi turned the ball over and then Price hit a Hawk technical. When the scoreboard read 7 Lehi, North Sanpete called a timeout. The timeout didn't help them because after both teams missed a bunch, Veach sailed a through. Calton hit a pair from the line. Lehi's superior rebounding was having an affect on the Hawks' poise, but both teams had tu novers, from errant passing and traveling calls. Gary Smith, Lehi's backup 6' 5" center, came off the bench to hit for A technical was called on the 55-2- bewildered Hawks who were had hit beginning to wonder what them. the Bruce Cook came in to hit from tanked a also Smith line, Gary charity toss. Lehi got a taste of it's own medicine in Saturday night's finale at the Pioneers Thanksgiving Tournament. Tooele and Lehi squared off in the championship game, both having beaten Friday's opponents by big margins. But the Pioneers couldn't maintain Friday's momentum against the quickness of the Tooele Buffalos. Not only were the Buffalos quick, they were accurate from the field and from the line. The Pioneerss had a tough time getting untracked at the foul line and missed easy goals from under the basket. The Pioneers didn't test the three-poiscore line too often, so that was not a factor in the game. Tooele went ahead in the first quarter 2 and never relinquished the lead. Coach Robinson tried different formulas, but the Buffalos continued to go around and through a good Lehi defense. The Pioneers seemed tentative when they got shooting opportunities and when they worke '. the ball underneath, the quicker Buffalos snagged rebounds from missed baskets. Lehi lost two of their most prolific scorers when Matt Calton and Scott Price fouled out in the fourth quarter. They also lost Bret Morrill with a leg injury. Lehi fell behind 9 at halftime and could not bring the score any closer despite a gallant last minute effort. The final score was for the Buffalos. Tooele also won the jayvee tournament held in the ladies gym. Members named to the team were: Scott Price and Matt Calton, Lehi; Stucki, Johnson and Wanlass of Tooele. Johnson was also named MVP. Others were Paul Bracken, Grant-- s ville; and Wade Olsen, North Sanpete.
