Emma, a resident of Larsen's Nursing Home in Lehi, observed her 103rd birthday last Friday - and although no formal observance was held then, the nursing home plans a birthday party for her today. And if she has her way, she'll have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich instead of cake and ice cream, according to Teresa Kagie, recreation director. "That's her favorite meal," Ms. Kagie says. Emma was born April 18, 1883 in Zurich, Switzerland, and has been a resident of the nursing home for the past 22 years - since 1964 - coming to the home from the Utah State Hospital. Although unable to speak or hear, she is able to make her needs known, Ms. Kagie says, and responds to attention with a friendly smile or a wave. She enjoys her dolls and teddy bear and, Ms. Kagie relates, was concerned one day when a boy, who was visiting another resident with his mother, tried to see her bear. "No way would she let him," Ms. Kagie says. "She takes her dolls everywhere, even to bed, and she treats them like Darin Bentley accepts call to -- newspap- er is like eating a restaurant meal - you pick and choose from what's offered. Polly Block, American Fork, wrote a book about Emma three years ago when she celebrated her 100th birthday, telling of the history of'the tiny lady. "Emma is extremely sweet. She is happy all the time and is a joy to be around. Visitors really don't think she is as old as she is because of her disposition," Ms. Kagie says.
